Just got the two calls in and have been playing here is my review...
1.Flawless workmanship!
2. Some of the best Mahogany I have ever seen.
3. Best and I truly mean this, Best sounding slate call I have heard!
4. As good a value for the price as you will find.
5. There are a lot of outstanding Pot Call makers, Add Derby city to the list. With this kind of product they will be here a long time.
I will have Adam and Scott give you their honest opinions as well especially since they hunt with slate pots.
Anxious to hear Porters evaluation of his.

Congrats on the new call and thanks for the review. *up*

sounds like you got a winner. hmmm, i think i might be needing a new slate call.
-
Brent and myself are glad you like them. We put a lot of care in those things. Brent tested them out before he shipped them and they sure could sing. I will say that we have some of the best looking Mahogany. I just cherry picked me a great looking piece last night. Brent had his eye on it to, but I beat him to it. ;D I am going to make me a slate/glass Magnum with it to use this spring. Can't wait to see what everyone else thinks about them.

Looks like you got a couple of nice ones there Mike. Nice work DC!

Got one for Christmas: Not overly thrilled with it.....Pot is very nice; slate is a bit ragged around the edges; a kit call made by my grandson sounds as good...or better! (Surely my opinion may change as I experiment with different strikers.)

Not doubting your word but could you post some pictures???? The slate on these is perfect. The sound is awesome. I just find it odd that they would let one go out like that as dedicated to quality as they are.

L-Wes we would be more than happy to replace the call or refund your money. As a young call maker company we can't afford to build something that doesn't please the customer. Every call that goes out the door here at DC is first inspected by all of us..... and then played by myself or jim to insure the quality is there. We back our product 100% customer approval. " If you aren't happy we aren't happy" So please contact me ASAP and i'll make every attempt to make you happy. Would you please post a picture of your DC call on Osage?. We have sold over 100 different pots and frankly your our first customer that hasn't liked there product, Not the first DC call has came back..... and many have ordered even more!! We are a far cry from a "craft" call believe me !!!

That's a generous offer...greatly appreciated. Not equipped to post pictures; can't return it...it was a gift; I don't have the packaging, address, etc.
To look at it, you would think that glue had leaked out and collected on the top edge of the slate, but that's not the case. I think it's simply slate fracture from cutting. Whatever, I will work it up...and ultimately find a striker or three with which I can play a seductive tune. The real test will come in the spring.
Thanks,
L-Wes

Anybody who slams a call maker like that with out attempting to work it out shouldn't be here. I don't own one of there calls but every picture I've seen of there calls is flawless. As far as not being able to send it back, nothing but lame excuses. It would cost you $4.95 to ship it back Priority. I'm with Mike, Either man up or shut up!

WOW!! Sorry to ruffle feathers here....that was not my intention. For some reason I thought counter opinions would be welcome. Guess not!

You don't rip someones call without giving them a chance to make it right (if there truly is a problem) You may not want to discuss this on here put you should try to work with DC. I'm sure they will make it right, again if there truly is a problem.

Just go ahead and admit it. You don't have one! DC has offered you a refund or another call. At least tell them who gave it to you.

I don't normally comment on slate calls, but these are very well done, and I like the design of the rim. Since I'm kind of a renegade in the design department, I like designs that are original in the call making arena. Of course as the saying goes, "there's nothing new under the sun", but there are a lot of classic designs used in the arena of architecture and other art mediums that have yet to be brought into the callmaking world.
Very well done *up*

I don't think anyone has an issue with you not liking the call, each maker works to have a signature sound that may or may not be what you are looking for. As far as craftsmanship, hard to tell without pictures to back it up but every pic Brent has shown so far looks like they take pride in what they do. The issue is with how you handled it. First and foremost, if you have a problem you should go to the maker FIRST instead of posting a slam on a public forum. That would be the decent thing to do.

Counter opinions are welcome...but only if they have merit. From what I've read yours don't merit being taken seriously. As stated by others if you really had an issue with the call in question you would/should have contacted the callmaker first. You don't even have to own a camera, all you needed to do was to make a phone call and send the call back. I'm sure they would have done everything possible to make it right.

Hey guys, this is Jim with Derby City. I would just like to reiterate what Brent has said for anyone who ever gets one of our calls. We inspect and test every call. We have thrown out many good pots that either don't make the grade with sound or appearance. It is possible that one bad one could get by or maybe damaged in shipping. That is where we want to shine as well. We believe in great customer service. We are going to make it right. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and we want honest opinions on our products. If you are not happy at all, give us a chance to make it right. I can guarantee that these are not craft calls. If anyone on here lives close to Louisville or comes here any time soon, please come to our shop and will we give you a tour and talk some Turkey. We think you will be impressed. Brent and I love this forum and look forward to meeting many of you in Nashville. Thanks for the great welcome and the support. It means a lot to all of us at Derby City.

I have requested a pm from L-Wes and have not received one yet. Jim hit it on the head about our product and customer service and I want to thank everyone for there support :grouphug: but if he does have one of our pots you can bet the farm we will make it right Thanks again

brent, all one can ask is that the callmaker try to make things right, which is exactly what you guys are willing to do.
i too think there is nothing to the comments of l-wes (or whoever he is) and i wouldn't be expecting to see that call come back to you guys. if he does have a call and can verify that there is an issue with it, then i apoligize. if not, pathetic is all i can say.
-
I've gone back and edited my post , I was wrong to say he doesn't have one, without really knowing ,But if l-wes has one were here to make it right *cheers*

Wow ! I haven't seen any topic blow up like this one. I would just like to add this: If someone bought you a gift from Wal-mart and it was defective, you would certainly return it to the store and not just keep it because it was a gift. If you really do have a call that doesn't sound good then please take them up on their offer to replace it. I know that ALL good callmakers will replace a call if the buyer feels it isn't right. We strive for 110 % satisfaction and it is not in a callmakers best interest to ever let one go out the door if it isn't top quality. Those who do, would not be as ready as Derby City is to make it right with you. I think that you have probably offended the ethics of we callmakers and that is why you are getting slammed. Do the right thing and send the call back. We all put guarantees on the calls we make for that reason! These guys are doing handstands to make it right, give them the chance before you rip them on a public forum. Callmaking is very serious to the people on this site !

What an excellent post here! I've talked to Brent and I can assure you they are working with L-Wes to make things right. This board is all about opinions here. I still believe we live in the best Country in the world. I would never go against something my grandfather fought so hard to protect... our freedoms. The first two amendments mean everything to me!
Now I will say this, if you are going to talk the talk, you'd better be able to walk the walk (a saying my grandfather told me many years ago).
I have a call from Derby City (getting ready to post pictures of it and many others). Brent has made sure I'm happy with it. I've had "issues" in the past with calls and I've always contacted the callmaker directly! I had one call that the mail system literally destroyed. Wasn't his fault and wasn't mine. He TOOK care of it though!
After talking to Brent, him and Jim are spending time to make this right. Derby City is trying to track down where the call went and who bought it. I can guarantee you it will be replaced!
Lastly, sorry I've been a little late in responding. Getting home at 4 in the morning while starting work at 8 in the morning... wears on an old man ROTFLMBO Didn't envision a 20 hour work day, but it happened.
Since L-Wes and Derby City are working on this privately now, we'll keep it private.
