Title: Burl wood striker

Any of you guys tried turning a burl wood striker? Just wondering how they would work since there is a lot curly grain in burls. I tried one a while back and because there was no stiffness in the wood it broke on the lathe.

Dave, Adam has one Walnut burl that turned out sweet. He tried a oak burl that snapped. It would have been awesome. That is the only two that I am aware.

I have several that Rick Powell of Blue Ridge Calls made that are very nice sounding and strong.  They are black walnut I believe.  However the figuring isn't real noticeable making for a stronger material I think.  In my opinion I wouldn't waste my time making them from burls.---Jason

Burl wood would be ok for the head but you would have to use a inserted shaft or most any burl will blow out. Maybe 1 out of 100 will take. If you like carbon they look ok but carbon is carbon some like it some don't.

I have made some, but it is better to just make a 2 piece striker so save on waste from trying to get a one piece one.

Made a nice cherry crotch paddle for a box  call once. Looked good until I tested it for strength and it broke in half!!!!  ROTFLMBO ROTFLMBO

Well I did it and got one turned.  RkLu It's got a real soft sound to it.
