Has anyone used Hickory for there boxcalls? If so is it better on the sides or the paddle?
-
I've never used Hickory on any boxes, but if I were gonna try it, it would definitely be as a paddle. Not saying it wouldn't work as a box, but it's pretty hard wood!

I have a boxcall with a Hickory paddle. It is a screamer.

Seems to me it would be a better paddle than a box . but give it a shot. Build one and you might like it RkLu

When I saw this I went to searching call maker websites. Found three that make a Pecan box and Hickory is almost exactly the same except in color. Actually it is legal to sell Pecan as Hickory and vise versa since they are in the same family and the characteristics are basically identical. The Pecan boxes I saw looks good but not sure how they sound.

If that is the case, I have made several boxes out of pecan, its a very dense wood and can get real high pitched. Never used it for the paddle, but will have to give that a shot

Some wood places do actually list the wood as Pecan/Hickory, so I guess they can send which ever they have.
