Title: Hello from WV, a few of my calls .
Post by: JFarley on August 28, 2016, 09:05:54 PM
Newbie here trying to make a decent sounding call. I've been lurking on here for awhile reading and aggravating a few good callmakers trying to learn as much as I can about call making. The longbox is my first it's paduak over butternut I'm thrilled with the sound I'm getting from it . The short boxes are purple heart over cedar and butternut , leopard wood scratch and a cherry double glass pot. Thanks for the look! Thanks for the kind words guys, I built my first short box around March of last year I think I've built 10 short boxes and just now getting into the pot calls I think I've turned seven so far just now getting serious about callmaking and I see more longboxes in my future I've harvested two gobblers with my calls and it's the best feeling! First name is josh but heck I'll answer to John too  ROTFLMBO. Lt Pac lives about 15 min south of me I've never met him but hoping to soon found out we have a mutual friend.

Sorry I called you John, Josh.  My eyes are so bad, I did not even see your name on that pot.

You can call me John, Jake St. John, or Mr. E.  I'm the old guy that makes very old style Turpin and Stribling calls with a yawk sound.  Mr. Jack Ellis taught me how to turkey hunt here on the mighty Mississippi River when I moved to Greenville in 1973.  He got an original Tom Turpin Shortbox from him when he came back from WWII.  Not long after that he had a stroke and he let me use it for 13 years. In 1987 I made my first Stribling.  Hooked on call making after that.  Mr. Jack had a philosophy on calling turkeys. (I have never practiced the third phase)  "He said , one day that old turkey will work and come to the YIP sound of this fool proof Lynch, and not the Turpin.  The next day he will work and come to the YAWK sound of this Turpin, and not the Cost style Lynch.  When he won't come to either, you slip in there behind a big tree 40 yards from him and shoot him off the limb at first light."  I carry so many boxes to the woods (Even a McKamey Onesider) that I look like Santa Clause opening his pack.  Good luck on your call making.  Hunt ethically and on his terms.  Above all, have fun with him.  Mr. E
