Title: Remembering Don Chancey
Post by: GR8CALLS on January 19, 2016, 08:55:31 PM
As Nashville looms on us in a few weeks, I think of a good friend who passed away some years ago. Don Chancey was a true gentlemen. He always met you with a smile and a firm hand shake. Never venturing into the world of criticism or rendering a sarcastic word about another call maker, he rose above all that to make a quality call and enjoy the art of call making.

In the next few weeks, I plan on sharing some of the fine calls Don made for me and would ask if you have any of his calls, to feel free to show them on this thread.

I'll let the calls speak for themselves.

 Mike

You can tell by looking at that photo and the smile on his face, that Don was in his element standing with you and Scott!

According to Mrs. Peggy, it was. I still remember all those cakes she would bring for the judges and the NWTF staff! That lady could sure bake! At Don's funeral, there were so many delicious cakes you just couldn't try them all.

Mr. Don Chancey... where to begin... A finer southern gentleman you will never meet.
I met Don during the Nationals in 2003, this was my first time entering and didn't know him at the time.  He came up to me and saw me studying one of his calls, he asked me what I thought.  Told him I seeing how it was done and that turned into a conversation not soon forgotten.  We walked over to my calls and I could tell by his face he wasn't worried about me in the 2004 Nationals.  However, he gave me a few things to improve on.  Until his passing this was an annual meeting I always looked forward to.  On our last meeting in Nashville (had no idea it would be our last) he ran my call, handed it back and said, "I can't tell you anymore.  Now just don't give up".  I will never forget my brief moments with Don and the nuggets of knowledge he willingly shared.
They say behind each good man is a better woman and Miss Peggy sure does top the list.  I always enjoyed seeing them together.

I'm still making calls but haven't entered any competitions since the passing of my Dad in 2009.  He was a part of the Nationals experience with us each year and I guess it took something out of it for me with Dad not there.

Thanks for the post, I'm enjoying the pics of Don's calls

Great post and photos,...he was a true gentleman indeed.    He is one of the people that always reminds me that being a custom call maker is more about the maker and less about the call.  But in his case he had 'em both covered.   Hope to see ya in Nashville Bill.
