Here are a few pics of some nice hens I harvested this month. Probably have about 30 lbs from one 30 acres grove just loaded with mature oaks. Anyone else hunt mushrooms in their down time?

Got a bunch of puff balls ready to be picked. Didn't know you could eat them till about 4 years ago. Jus have to make sure they are nice and white on the inside.

Yes, I have harvested close to 25 lb of Sheepshead or Hen of the woods. How do you prepare your goodies. My late Aunt Josephine used to make a stew like dish with them, venison,Greek olives and wine. Our gang would have it at lunchtime on opening day of buck season. Man was it ever good. We have not been able to exactly duplicate the recipe yet. Gently sautéd in butter and a little white pepper are pretty darn good as well.

Right away I usually just break a few pieces of and saute with butter and garlic. But the big feast is pheasant breasts rolled in pancake mix fried in butter, add some water and chicken stock, onion, the mushrooms and some fresh lemon juice. Let simmer for as long as you can take it. Havent had them with venison yet but I have plenty so im sure its in the near future. Actually found a nice 4 or 5lb chicken of the woods today, not sure of other names for that one. Fall mushroom season is over i believe in Northern IL, was duck hunting this morning and decoys were actually freezing up.
