Title: Teal Social Raffle Call
Post by: Jake St. John on September 20, 2015, 06:29:33 PM
Just finished this Gator Gobbling Stribling for our Annual Mississippi Teal Social at Willow Point Duck Club Thursday night.  For the last few years I have been raffling off a call.  It is to thank the guys for the outstanding cooking that they come up with each year.  It also gives me a chance to fellowship with a lot of the young duck hunters in our state.  They turkey hunt too, and have ordered a lot of calls over the years.   ---  This one has an English Chestnut paddle from wood that I harvested a few years back in Batesville, Ms.   The box is Honduran Mahogany from Jeff Estridge in Jackson, Ms.   It is funny how most of the younger hunters go for this model.  It is an easy playing old school call that has a big flock of turkey talk in it.

That is a beautiful box sir. Could someone briefly tell me the differences in Honduran mahogany and Spanish Cedar?

I actually put a dark walnut Danish oil coating on this call.  It has a look very similar to Spanish cedar.  I have seen the color of Spanish cedar and some mahoganies very similar.   The grain cells in the cedar seem to be longer and straighter. The densities seem to be similiar just from working with the two. Very similiar in tonal quality.

Thank you for that answer.  I knew that Spanish Cedar was not a true Cedar, its in the mahogany family.  That's why I wondered.  If its  a similar tonal quality then it must sound good!

And the winner of the Gator was Josh Criswell.  He handed it back to me to personalize the call for his young son.

Because Josh is hunting with this Gator that he got from me in 2010.
