Title: My first Lapp dance!!!
Post by: VGJ5 on March 13, 2015, 09:15:28 PM
Well, I got my very first call from the legendary Mike Lapp, and is it ever a good one!  I fell in love with this combo when I saw it during the call auction this past fall.  I just about punched my computer screen when I was destroyed by other bidders.  *cry*

After obsessing about and staring at a picture of said call every day for a good long while, I contacted Mike.  He told me it was a difficult call to make, pretty much right off the bat.  He almost talked me out of it and into another call at one point, but I managed to resist his Jedi mind tricks.  He said he would make the call soon so that he would remember how he did it because it was a difficult call to make.  Currently being on his waiting list for two other calls, I wondered if this was another mind trick.   *peep*

In all seriousness, though, he did an absolutely amazing job on this call.  The sound that comes out of it is all feathers, and it spits out clear purrs and clucks every time.  So, don't let the EXTREME beauty of this call fool you; it's a hunter for sure!  The pictures really don't do it justice, because you have to move it in the light to really see that leopardwood pop.  I did my best on one of the few days when it doesn't rain down here.

Mike, thank you again for making this awesome special call for me!  I will cherish it, and it will certainly be with me this weekend.

Not sure who Miles is, but LOL, Mike knows how to squeeze the turkey out of difficult woods. Except for possibly, Olivewood!  *peep* *peep*

Gaines you are welcome and I'm happy that you are pleased with the call and thanks for the kind words guys  *cheers* I don't mind if I never build another box call from the leopardwood but I'm sure I will make something out of it  ;D ;D

WOW Bill as you age your memory seems to stay sharp I think with age comes experience and I think your buddy Miles would like another shot at making an olive wood call so if you have a blank of the wood send her to Miles the worst thing that can happen is he fails and we continue to laugh about it so what do ya think can I squeeze a turkey outta some olive wood  *lol*
Oh boy I sure hope Miles hasn't bite off more then I can chew  *peep*

What are you and bill talking about  *peep*

Jeff about 8 years ago Bill sent me some olive wood to make a box call from I tried to over achieve and ended up failing to get a good call from the olive wood of all the different woods that Bill has challenged me with the olive wood is my black eye ;D
The call was not bad until I got over confident and ruined it  *peep* The subject tends to surface on occasions  *lol*

I know what your saying Mike. I've done a few with Olive and they sound good when you first play them, but the more you play it or work with it the worst it gets. I made myself one that really sounded good until I started running some hard cuts and fly downs cackles on it, I set it down and tried running it again a couple hours later and it wouldn't play? The oils in Olive wood will  kill the call shortly after you run it  *cry*. The only thing made with Olive wood are trumpets and strikers that will play very long for hunting usage. As far as looks go, you can't beat it for a shelf call.
