Please don't name any call makers in the thread.
Thanks

As bad as I wanted to mark Turpin, I marked what I'm best at... pot calls!  I'm getting much better with boxes and soon I'm sure that would be what I would answer with.

Soft calling on a pot call has killed more turkeys for me than anything else. Not sure if this says my loud calling is not good or what. I have killed a few birds with nothing more than a couple clucks, purrs, and scratching the leaves.

My choice would be a pot call slate/glass with a couple of" old growth " strikers ,proven turkey killers

Well, gonna be the black sheep and say Scratchbox... Our birds are super pressured and not many people use the scratchbox here.. I've had that call work many times when nothing else would! Just something different the ol' Tom's haven't been hammered with all season..

I think nothing beats a good slate. Although they can be a bit tempermental on cold spring mornings.

Ok then does Mikey mean the turpin style box or the turpin style trumpet. When I hear turpin I think trumpet first and box second but I'm not a knowledge of turkey call history.

I'd feel handicapped without at least 1 or 2 diaphragms as I've used them in the woods the most and I know I can call at least good enough to fool turkeys with them. After spending enough time in the turkey woods potless I'd certainly find myself reaching for a pot wishing one was in my pocket like the diaphragm I've used them alot to call birds to the gun. I'm lacking a good box and wish I had a good one so I know I'd use one of them and I've seen how effective a good one can be. So to answer the question I'd hate to be limited to 1 call even though I have gone to the woods with only one its not an ideal choice and something I'd not do often but for the purpose of this poll I voted a trumpet. A trumpet should last forever without sanding, chalking or tuning, and its got the volumn a diaphragm lacks I sometimes need in the big woods I hunt.

Voted trumpet.  I can do almost everything on one that I would want to (except purr and gobble) and can do somethings a lot better than with other calls.  Like wisturkeyhunter said, it also has the volume required sometimes, but can also be played so low that you couldn't hear it at 20 paces.

But not only that, they sound good, look really cool hanging around your neck  ;D and the history behind the call is appealing.

That was a hard one, I love my box calls, but for a "go to" call, I had to chose the pot call. A two sided crystal over slate allows me to get hard when I need to and soft when needed as well. I called in a ton of birds last season with that set up in a goncalo alves pot. And that wood is dense enough that if you run out of shells, hit him in the head with the pot and it wont even scratch the finish *aah*

In the past I'd have voted for a boxcall as I've called in a lot of turkeys with an old longbox I've had since I started hunting at age 12. I voted for trumpet because since I started using them they have proven themselves deadly and I haven't been on a hunt since without one around my neck.

I'd hate to have a pot call or box call as my only call and it start to rain hard when I was in a good position to call a gobbler to the gun.

Wore a slicker in the rain Turkey hunting for years. Always used a box. It never got wet. Could call from under the slicker and do it effectively. Have killed a few beards that way. I'm not gonna try and catch bath water with it but I can call a turkey even in the rain.

The diaphram mouthcall is what I am best with . But they can fail . Any call on the list would work in a perfect woods ,,,I mean world. But like it has already been stated , humidity, rain , broken or lost can turn a good hunt sour .
A wingbone or trumpet can be broken , though not as likely with one tied around your neck . I ain't near as good with either as some fellers , but am improving . Hot or cold , wet or dry they sound good .

If , if ,if I could only tAKE ONE ? ,,,,Wingbone,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I don't have a good trumpet ,,,,,,,,,,YET!

It is really surprising that Scratch Calls has as many votes and that Pot calls are that highly favored over boxes! I really thought that short boxes would be neck and neck with pots!

I like yelpers and scratchboxes....BUT...limited to just one caller it would have to be one of my own make.....
a straight sided box caller...probably with a snakewood or ebony lid...I noticed that not many people chose this type caller....may be one of the reasons they work so well when it comes to killing turkeys......Charlie

I would have to pack a slate over glass pot call in my pocket if I could only take one. They can be so versatile and to my ears the slate reproduces turkey better than anything. Especially when you are closing the deal. These days the birds can be so tough that I try to improve my woodsmanship all the time. Sometimes it doesn't matter what call you have in your vest, they just won't come to them. So I sit back and listen so I can set up a good 'ol ambush.

... it would now be a trumpet / yelper - what an incredible response / reaction from the birds; & I don't even know how to play it worth a darn - yet ... ;)

I would take a Gator Gobbing Stribling to the woods.   This is a call that will soft call when he wakes up, it is a call that will get his blood flowing when opens his eyes with a subtle fly down cackle, it is a call that will give him a false sense of another gobbler moving into his territory with a strong gobbler mature yelp.  It is a call that will promise him  everything with the raspiest hen cutts you ever heard,  it is a call that will make him fly down and come straight to you with the most impressive Mature Gobble on the market.  It is the Gator Gobblin Stribbling by John Eddleman Custom Calls!!!!  Oh, I forgot not to mention any names!!!  It is a hunting short box.

Tough choices. I voted trumpets. If you had given me two choices they would have been a trumpet and a short box. I've been playing trumpets about 6 years now and love them. Don't have to worry about them getting wet, the reeds sticking together or getting soggy and sounding like a frog. They say the way to become good with a particular call is to leave all of your other calls at home. Hmm........

When I was able to hunt I always only took ONE call to the woods. Partially because I only had 2 but I was taught get a good call and learn to play it and have confidence in the call and your ability! It worked. The call became second nature. Didn't need a bunch of calls!

I've hunted turkeys in Shannon County every year since 1971, the lynch box is the favorite in this part of the country with the mouth call probably second, I think the longbox with all the different sounds you can get works best. I've called in and killed over 40 turkeys and on most of them I've used a box, a mouth caller, and a lot of the time a slate also. But if I could just take one it would be the longbox.

why ya gotta make us choose just one?  haha....I had to go with the pot call, easiest for me to use and durable yet easy to throw in the pocket and you can really change the tone on them with a couple different strikers--loud or soft--you can pretty much perform any sound out of a good pot call

I love the sound of a box call and it' s ability to penetrate the late spring foliage, but I am more comfortable with a slate or glass pot. I agree with the previous post, choosing 1 call is hard because different birds/situations require different calls, setup, tactics, etc.

Bill is right, it is really a matter of comfort and what you are used to.  For me as a bit of a romantic for old things I like a short box.  I love looking at the wood every time I pull it out of my vest, I love the feel of it in my hands and the sound, well... I love the versitility of what wood offers.

After neally 30 years of dropping toms (never killed a hen and only killed 1 jake in my life), my favorite go to call is a Slate.  IMHO, nothing performs as well.  I take a truckload of calls (pots, boxes, long boxes and flutes) with me to the woods every spring and I always kill birds with pot calls.

I am just guessing on the following since I haven't recorded my kills.   I have bagged probably 35 birds.  1 with a box around 1985, 4 or 5 with diaphrams and the other 30 or so birds with pot calls (everything but copper).

It would be a toss up between a mouth call and trumpet, but I voted trumpet. If I had never started running a trumpet I would have said a mouth call.

These are both waterproof...use in any type of weather, very light weight and easy to carry. both can be carried on a lanyard around your neck. The mouth call can make so many different sounds, but again i selected the trumpet because its sound seems to carry. Birds just seem to flip out over it.

I love all turkey calls.   I like to admire them and run them all.  But my choice if I could only take one is the diaphram mouth call.  I know some have trouble learning to use one but they are versatile, small and easy to carry and can make some good turkey talk.  I love using one to close the deal because both hands are on the gun...

I wish I was better with a trumpet and that would be my vote. Have more confidence in a box.

Up until recently I'd have said diaphragm, because of its hands-free benefits for close-in work.  But if I had to choose today, I'd pick a box call, because I've got more confidence in my call-less calling recently.
