In spite of the fact that I make some decorative calls, I have always admired more traditional calls, and found them to be as beautiful as some fancier calls (even more so sometimes). So, from time to time I try my hand at box calls with checkering and inlays that are also meant to be taken to the field...like many of the guys do so beautifully on this forum. This is a walnut over butternut call I made last weekend with some initials on the lid. I'm not as good at these as many of you. But I love the style and I had fun doing it. I put that little leather thong on the handle of my calls. I take it off and tie down the lid to the box when I carry it. But, it's more a decoration than an important feature. I just like how it looks and find a use for it. I also have to add that whenever I make a box call I am reminded of Lee Smith (Frozen Crow) and how grateful I remain to him for giving me pointers when I first started learning to make box calls. Still learning.
