Title: Question about tuning a Box Call?

When u say tuning a call, Does that mean adjusting the screw for the lid to run/hit a certain spot or sanding the edges a little bit? Where should the lid hit, is it always close to the same spot or is it trial & error adjusting it? Thanks for the info & help, Just trying to learn & understand.

Well I have not been making calls as long as 90 % of all these guys but here is what I have learned...to answer your question its all of the above...everything you have to do to get the sound you are after...sanding...chiseling,,,scraping with the pocket knife...screw adjustment  its all part of the process..Al once told me and I quote "If you aint making kindleling..you aint making calls'  and believe me I have made enough for 2 winters..I have taken notes...studied other calls....and recieved alot of good advice...as far as the lid goes...look at the pattern underneath the lid after you chalk it and run it a few times...most of the time it makes a "M" shaped pattern....Just my thoughts...like i said  theres alot more experienced guys on here to ask...but thought I would share..

Tuning is more about getting the sides the correct thickness and the top the correct weight and shape than it is about the screw.  Generally the screw should be tilted slightly to the back of center.  You may need to adjust the screw a little, but that is a pretty minor piece of tuning.  I usually build up a call leaving the sides thicker than I think they need to be and then slowly work them down till they are just right.  Removing material from different places will do different things to the sound.  There is alot to it and it takes a long time to figure it out, so if you have more specific questions, post away!!

I have made 4 boxes my advice is to buy alot of sandpaper after hour upon hours of working with the call and you think it's starting to sound right STOP .  After all of this contact one of the good box call makers and Order you one.  YEPPER that's what I'll do the next time.   *aah*


Sorry had to poke fun at myself for listen to a freind who says you should just make one yourself     RIGHT   *cry*
