Title: Opening day bird
Post by: Porter on April 21, 2014, 11:48:38 AM
Wish I had this awesome story to tell, but to be quite honest, one of the more borings hunts I've had.  Birds didn't gobble, barely strutted, but I did call this one away from a hen with an all Osage Jordan built by Daryl!

I knew he was coming my way and it did make me nervous.  He semi-strutted once and then just kept walking.  At 36 yards he started getting nervous, so I let the 12 gauge roar and the #5 Longbeards dropped him.  I put a heck of a hole in his head and blew a lot of feathers off!   It wasn't the greatest shot and I had to hurry on the shot.

I'm done my first week and now off to try and get some friends a bird called in.  I would have never known this bird was around, but a hen gave him away :)

All in all another fine bird on the ground.  He had broken both of his spurs and I still need to measure the beard.  Spurs were maybe 1/2 to 3/4" and he was shot in the rain.  One thing I learned is... you cannot shoot them while in bed!

Goes to show a blind squirrel finds an acorn every once in awhile.

What does that make, your second bird in 20 years?  *peep*

A late CONGRATS on this one, man!  I actually got confused about this one.  I must have jumbled your hunts from the first two days together when I redacted your quote to make you sound like a creeper on my reply.  I see it now.

Before:
I scored opening day on Monday.  One of the most boring hunts, but a heck of a bird!

Took the farmers daughter (that sounds so weird) today and had a jake sneak up on us.  Scared me to death.  Saw a nice strutter, but just couldn't close the deal.

Going back there tomorrow and hope to get her a bird called in again!
After:
I scored opening day on Monday.  Took the farmers daughter (that sounds so weird) today . . . but just couldn't close the deal.  Going back there tomorrow and hope to get her . . . again!

Either that, or else I'm just losing track of the days.  I probably need to get more sleep, which I never do in April.

One thing I learned is... you cannot shoot them while in bed!
I say it all the time!  This is my post on Facebook from the woods when I killed one on 4/6 and it rained from daylight until about 10:30, or so:  “We don’t always get those 80-degree/sunny/still days.  Sometimes, we have to fight them in the rain.  You can’t kill them if you’re not out there!”

Nice start to it, Mike!  Now get out there and take another one!
