I'm a little slow in posting this, but I wanted to share my story.
It was early December and I was looking at the entry forms for the Grand Nationals. I went to bed that night thinking about what I could do for a decorative scratch box project. I went to sleep with it on my mind and I woke up a couple of hours later with an idea; why not make some little books on a stand. The call could be one of the books! They should, of course, be turkey hunting books. It was a no brainer that TENTH LEGION should be the book that was actually the call. I was lying there thinking about it when I realized that this was a terribly off-the-wall idea, and that's when God seemed to say "Where do you think that idea came from, anyway?" I knew then and there that His book had to be included in the set! Here are the results:

The bookends are cherry wood gobbler silhouettes, sitting on Magnolia blocks that look like marble. I did the lettering with my laser and used the fonts that the actual book covers were printed in.

TENTH LEGION was the call. It was made of mahogany. The bookmark was the striker. Sorry the picture is not better:

I knew that I was up against a lot of great call makers, but I hoped just to get a small bit of recognition. I was more than happy to learn that it took fourth place, and one of the first people that I broke the news to was Mr. Tom Kelly. Just to see his smile and a nod of approval was something that I will never forget! I hope the author of the thick, black, book approved, too!
The title of the project is RECOMMENDED READING.

I am sorry to say I missed that Tom...would have really liked to have seen it .What an idea, and what a surprise to get the nod of approval from Mr Kelly himself.

That is cool Tom! Doing something unique and being bold enough to walk a "different" path is not really a bad think I think. ;)

Super idea, and super job making it. I'd love to see pics of the call and striker separately if you have any, or as you were making it. It's a on-of-a-kind idea, and it looks real. No doubt it was inspired. Way to go.

Here's the call again. It took two tries to get it right. The first one just didn't have the cubic volume and turned out pretty squeaky. Bill Henkel ran the call, and I'm sure he will agree that the sound was not up to par, even with my second attempt, but it was much better than the first. I made the book just a tad thicker the second time for more cubic volume and switched to a slate and wood striker in an attempt to get a truer sound. I know that some of my tuning problem was due to the enamel finish which really seemed to change the pitch and tone once it was applied. On the second attempt, I began with a very light coat of sanding sealer so that only one coat of enamel would be needed.

Again, it's so clever, well conceived and well done. Thanks for sharing the additional pictures. That's a real collector's piece.
