I was riding down US 64 today in NC right after the big T. storm and about ran out of the road. I looked to my right in a big field and seen a gobbler. I looked quick behind me and there was no traffic behind me, so I slowed down, almost to a stop. There was 31 long beards pecking cow *poo* as hard as they could. That is the most gobblers I have seen together in 20 years. I seen 42 in a flock 20 years ago. These were all very nice long beards, not a jake in the bunch. That give me the itch that I need to scratch. Now I have to make another trip back down there and see if I can the land owner and get a permit to hunt the area, there were posted signs on every fence post. I think I know who owns the land but I did not have time to go and check, I had to get back to WV.

That would have been a sight. Would have been fun to have a call or a locator to get them going. *lol*

I bet that was some sight. Does anyone have any info on the red wolves that are roaming in NC? I talked with a very large landowner there last evening and he told me of the red wolves that were introduced on an island there. Said they beat the truck back across the bridge and began crossbreeding with the coyotes. Now any coyotes caught with thier blood are off limits and are federaly protected. I would like to learn more about this situation.

That is awesome maybe you can get the gis map online and find out whose property it is and see if you can hunt there. The gis maps really help me locate landowners to get permission to hunt as well as to get a good survery of the surrounding land.

The US Wildlife put the Red Wolves out on the Alligator River. I have heard that they were starting to breed with some coyotes and that there is some legislation that they are currently trying to pass so that you can not shoot coyotes in that county because the red wolves would get mistaken for coyotes and be taken out. http://www.ncwildlife.org/Learning/Species/Mammals/RedWolf.aspx

Thanks for the link Mike. Wow if they stop any coyote harvest there, the turkey and deer will suffer tremendously.IMO The landowner I know there says the numbers of both are down already. Would love to hook one of those up even just to release it.

I totally agree!! We don't need either one, the yotes or the red's. If they want them maybe we can ship them to DC. We already have the best money can buy there.

I have seen then Red Wolfs down in Hyde Co. NC. I have too seen loads of turkeys on Hwy 64 too. A few years back I saw a flock of over 100 birds. The were 21 strutter a in that bunch.

About 5 miles from were I seen the gobblers, the wife and I have a home that sets on 6 acr. I can hunt all in behind our place and have. But I have never got into anything like I seen yesterday.
Was at my cabin today in Pocahontas Co. WV and I have a flock of 24 coming into the feeder I have in the yard. I filled it again today, but have to make sure it is empty by the first week of April. The bears will empty it for me in a few more weeks. As soon as the wake up. lol It is a mixed flock some nice long beards with some good hooks. We watched them out of the bedroom window today. We still had about 6" of snow there.

Lonnie, my Dad always loved to camp in Pocohontas co. We lived in Greenbrier co on Flat mtn. Winter on the mtn was always long and tough.

Can't blame him, I have hunt Pocahontas Co. WV and Bath Co. VA for 44 years. We started our cabin 2 years ago and got it finished last year, working almost only on weekends. The Place in NC I have to move on now. After the wife retires in June we are going to put our NC home up for sale, and live in our WV home. After this year I will not have a place to stay in NC.

In the fall I had 11 toms come in to me in November. It was one of the most amazing sounds in the woods ever. They were gobbling and cutting up in 20 degree weather!!!
I'd love to have seen that and seeing that many bird would have been amazing!
