Looking to replace a old hand held GPS
For a I.T. Ignorant person-
What's the easiest and best one on the market in you guys opinion -
Topi feature would be nice
Any advice or experience is appreciated

I like Tim's fancy GPS and I still use the same, but put me in the turkey woods and I always know where to go and don't need a darn GPS to get me close to that gobbler! *ride*

Jeff, I have something better than a GPS, I'll give it to you, Ole' Buddy. In the early 70s I bought a device that hooked to my truck horn that would blow the horn for 3 secs. every 15 min. I used it when coon hunting to get back to my truck. I still have it.
Have you ever heard 00 buck shot ripping through the trees at 2:00 A.M............ I didn't know there was a house 100 yds. from where I had parked my truck. The dogs treed so I went to them.

I'm surprised your "fancy buggie" as Witter called it, doesn't have a GPS built in... I guess the installed the turkey magnet instead. Lucky for you they make after market GPS's, those turkey magnets are hard to find...
Seriously though, your phone is probably the most convenient solution.

I have Garmin Oregon 450. It's great. $400.
$30 apps on iphone works just as well. Google Earth is VERY powerful!

It depends on your application. If you spend a considerable amount of time in the woods and want to be able to make custom routes i recommend you take a look at the Garmin handheld GPS.
Specifically, I recommend the old Map60csx or the newer model 62s over the touch screen models. Pass on the units with a camera. They will drain your batteries and the photo quality is disappointing. With the 62s you can add a micro SD card for expanded memory. You can also load third party hunting topo maps or make your own custom maps.
The learning curve with most units is about the same. I can usually teach someone how to run one in an afternoon. If you have basic map and compass skills you will catch on quick. I am an old school compass user and advocate learning the manual navigation methods. That said, advances in handheld GPS capabilities and mapping software have come a long way and are powerful tools.
There's also some decent GPS apps for your smartphone if you are always in an area with cell coverage. I personally find the dedicated handheld units more durable for hard field use.
Google garmin 62s and you will find all kinds of video tutorials and reviews.

I got my first GPS last year a Garmin ETREX 20.. I basically wanted it for out of state to get back to the truck or mark birds when scouting or roosting.. It worked well, was easy to use and has more than enough features for me..

Here in the Mississippi swamps, I just use my cell phone and Google Earth. Out of state, I use a Garmin Etrex. On several occasions it has saved me many steps. Problem is, each year I have to reaquaint myself with the Garmin,'cause I'm an old coot who can't remember what I had for lunch, much less how to navigate my way around all the different applications on the GPS that I haven't used since last season. When I upgrade (probably next year) it will be for a new Garmin basic unit with no "new stuff" to learn.
Maybe the best insurance from not being able to find your truck would be to buy snakeboots with a distinctive tread, so yoiu could always just backtrack!

Jeff - You can just print this out, fold it up and put it in your pocket. Save yourself a bunch of money on a GPS.

With all the trashin and thrashin going on....difficult to not take a shot but I figure you all already got 'em down... ;D
Jeff, Muck was rite about the camera, if ya don't need to take a pick coordinated with a GPS point they don't help much. I use cell phone apps a good bit for mapping and general locations. But if I want to mark a spot, say a little blind I build or a particular spot to cross a nasty creek, so I can find it in the dark....I want a GPS. They do routes and stuff following old roads, ect best. I have used the Garmin Etrex, Oregon and Dakota's at work. And a few others. I think the Oregon is a pretty good deal for the $ and you can get a map package to suit your needs. Great online support, ect.. Not that it mite matter to you but the newer ones with BIGGER VIEW SCREENS are easier on old eyes..... ;)
I think if I had one of them killer buggies, I would just hire a driver (Maybe them Big Ear boys?) and just not worry about it. *wha*

Jeff, the. Garmin 62 series are pretty easy to use.

If you use an iPhone, try the "Topo Maps" app. You can download every USGS Topo map in the US, just not at the same time. I keep my most used maps loaded at all times. It works as a GPS and with a compass heading, it will show you whether you can, or should attempt to go to one you hear. You can't draw routes or tracks on it, but it does all I ask for $7.99. I carried a Garmin 12 for years but it now stays in the truck. The screenshot and e-mail allows you to share information instantly with a friend.

Jeff I'm not sure you are capable of using a handheld gps. I've talked to you around a computer before... they are pretty complicated for you :)
Either I'm hunting in the wrong area or we have terrible cell coverage here, but 80% of the places I hunt there is zero cell phone reception.
My ole crappy handheld gps works great. Of course I don't need a topo option because here in MO we know if we are going up or down hill and I can tell you if it's steep or not *peep*
We all know kneepads is always knee deep in the *poo* ... his classy snake boots show that!

Jeff , I've used the garmin Legend for a long time, It's easy to use and small enough to carry any where. IT is nice to be able to get to that certain tree in the dark and not stumbling around looking for it. You can't go wrong with a Garmin.

I have the Garmin Oregon 400T and it does fine for me. When I have cell phone coverage Google earth is also a must as well when on out of state trips.
