Title: Ice..snow..turkeys
Post by: Blackfalcon on January 16, 2014, 02:28:58 PM: Hey guys..sorry haven't posted much lately..it's been a hard winter here with colds/flu and sub zero or barely above temps so I have been mostly hibernating... ;)
We had some major icing followed by snow, I managed to get out with the camera and capture some images of turkeys feeding in some apple trees...about a 4 mile hike up there but worth it. These conditions are probably the hardest on the wild turkey..it was interesting to observe how resourceful and adaptive they can be...only the strongest survive. I was able to very slowly get within 20 feet and didn't linger too long so as to contribute more stress but they didn't seem overly bothered by my presence and were still there the following day.

It is as hard a winter for our birds, as they have ever had to endure. I hope they all make it through but am afraid the birds are going to take a hit. Thanks for sharing......

It is estimated that in NW Wisconsin we will loose near 60% of our wild turkeys and same for whitetail. Finding them dead in their tracks after our most recent 12" snowfall. We have over 50"s of snow in the ground.
