Post by: BD1 on November 29, 2009, 07:01:07 PM
What woods go good with cherry for a box call & what tones would the have (High, Low, Raspy, Mild) Would u use the cherry as side walls or paddle? Just wondering?

Sinker Cypress...Real Raspy, super sound as the box (Cherry Lid)
Spanish Cedar as a box (Cherry Lid)
Butternut as a box (Cherry Lid)
Cedar as a box (Cherry Lid)
Walnut as a lid (Cherry Box)
Paduak as a lid (Cherry Box)

These are the one's I've heard, I prefer the Sinker Cypress

Cherry is a great wood for box calls.  Especially for lids.  I have used it with cedar, butternut, sassafras, mahogany, sp. cedar.  It would probably work with just about any wood.  Next to walnut, it is the wood I find to be the most versatile.  These are just the ones I have tried.  Generally, I find cherry lids give a sweet, clear tone.  But it will depend to a great degree on the wood it is matched with.

As a box, I have used walnut lids and maple lids.  It will be more high pitched as a box as it is a fairly dense wood.

As for your other question, Generally hard dense woods give higher pitched sounds.  Usually with most (but not all) box calls, the lid will be a harder wood than the box.

Lots of great advice, but one I would give that I think makes one of the best turkey boxes (ok hold your breath I'm not going to say Osage) is poplar/cherry...  Al was the first one to say to me that that combo was a killer in the woods for sure.

Lot's of people look over Poplar and I think it just doesn't have a lot of awesomeness in it (I know that's not a word but I'm a Ozarkian)

But if you want a cherry call... I'd highly recommend a Poplar box!!!

Porter is right...wait did I really say that??  Oh well...Cherry over poplar is an awesome combo.  Not sure how I overlooked that one.  Poplar may not be sexy, but it has lots of turkey in it!!

This is my favorite shortbox call, it has a cherry lid with a mahogany box, made by Chuck Anderson. It sounds incredible, to say the least.  *up*
