Ohio had a great hatch this year. Seeing lots of poults ranging from grown to grouse size. Seems that other areas of the country did not fair as well. I'm getting a lot of reports from friends down south and out east that the hatch was not good. Please share what you guys have seen and where.

From what I am hearing from local farmers, the hatch here in West Virginia is spotty. Some places are very good and some not so good. Here in my county, we are getting two weeks for fall turkey hunting this year which is a first. Must have been pretty good here.

S.C. from all I have heard and seen had the worst hatch in several years. We are over fifteen inches of rain above historical averages. Glad to hear Ohio did so good, hope your hunting is great!

MO should be rocking again!!!! I am so excited. We start next Sunday (the 15th with bows). I've been shooting a lot and am ready for some fun!

Seeing lots of birds here in central Pa, Not real big flocks, seen three flocks this morning all with ten twelve birds each. My cousins dog is doing well with its training. Going to be lots of feed in the woods this fall

Bill that's great to hear. I don't think we have acorns this year except some red oaks. We do have the best beech nuts I've ever seen. Been racking my brain making mental notes where all the beech groves are. We also have grapes which attract our birds well. I think they get drunk on them.

Marlin are acorns around here are the best I have ever seen... except they started falling about a month ago!
I was reading that beech nuts are amazing this year and I guess I need to see if we have any around here. It's something I'm not used too, so I'm not sure they are around here.

I have been running my tractor and bush hog on my place the past two weeks and have not seen a turkey. But I am not surprised. I only saw a couple hens on my place last spring. Some places in Arkansas the birds are coming back but not in my area.
Rickey I've been meaning to ask how things are going in Arkansas. If memory serves me right, they canceled fall hunting a few years ago in Arkansas. Is it still closed?

Hopefully Arkansas will start having the success we are having in MO! I love fall turkey hunting, but it would stink not having any birds around :( I've been fortunate around this area to have a lot of good places to hunt!

In the last few weeks I have seen several batches of young here in AR ranging from 8-10" tall to almost as big as the hens. Some hatched very late as in July or August. Crazy, but I am glad they are persistent.

Marlin, lots of beech nuts here to. they seem to be in the fields in the morning hitting the grasshoppers pretty hard. Where i grew up they have been planting lots of sunflowers, last year they left some stand and the turkeys where there every day. Cutter and I went for a walk yesterday and walked accross hill above sunflower fields, it was all scratched up. about half way accross cutter took off and was barking up a storm. i don't know how many there was but i could hear them taking to the air, going to go back out in the morning. Lots of bear sign in the farm land, everybody has been seeing one around my dads that they say is 450, 500lbs.

Mike: if you can find a beech grove they usually hold the birds very well. My friend Gary and I looked around a little better today and did find several different red oaks with acorns. Not record crop that's for sure. Sometimes I think it makes much better hunting. The birds need to stay on the move to find food and they call much better if you break them a little far from their normal roost.
Bill: you and Cutter should have great hunting. Are you also hunting New York this fall to get a jump on the season.

Took Cutter out again this morning and seen lots of birds, we seen two flock that had over 25 birds in them and A couple smaller flocks. Seen a couple gobblers too. Lots of food and lots of birds, looks like it going to be a fun year.

Went and walked one of my primary hunting grounds and acorns everywhere. Saw some scratching, but not as much as I would have liked. Farmer told me they had been in his hay field almost daily eating grasshoppers. I told him to bail that hay before Sunday so I could see in the field *lol*
One week until archery season starts for us!

Turkeys will walk over acorns to get to the grasshoppers so scratching dont mean a lot.

Seems to be a very spotty hatch in central WV. I've seen more poultless hens this year than any I can remember. The grouse population seems to be very high though. I've seen 16 birds in about 1 hr. of driving on our lease. The mast crop seems to be pretty spotty as well. Cherry seems to have done very well. There is some beech and white oak as well but more cherry than anything.

Hatch is terrible this year in my pat of GA. Everything is still flooded from almost two months of rain.

I went up state PA this past weekend and did see several different flocks. Some were normal size for this time of year, but others were real small, and I assume a late hatch either due to preditors or the rainy late spring/early summer.

silverspur: we have the same here. they are either full grow or little guys for this time of year. we had 3 or 4 weeks of dry weather end of May and first of June that let many early hatches survive then we were flooded for 3 or 4 weeks which delayed many that re-nested. last evening I saw a flock of 24 birds. most full grown but some chicken size. daddy Byrne used to tell me that a month of grasshopper eating will double a young turkeys size. that is what this flock was doing so I hope he was right.

Marlin, I am also hoping that the deer start picking at the corn for some extra food. Will be interesting fall and see how many guys shoot the real little ones or let them walk. I prefer to let walk and get bigger. Normal size poults of the year are fine but some of these capons will not be ready for prime time

Lot's of birds here on the eastern edge of the Mo Ozarks. We had a really great hatch. Also lots of acorns, red and white, also a lot of soft mast. Can't wait as it should be a great fall. *up*
