Title: Box Chalk
Post by: Will on August 18, 2013, 04:06:06 PM
I use the blue and red chalk for my boxes. I believe it is carpenters chalk. Is there a difference in performance between the colors. Does red work better than blue on different woods. I'm just curious if thee colors mean a difference in how the chalk was made. I have boxes some with red and some with blue.

I would think the hardness and any wax would be the difference. The pencil size chalk is a problem getting. Can only find it in red.

As long as it is carpenters chalk it shiuld be wax free and good to use.  I think color is only a personal preference. Neil Cost was known to known to dislike blue chalk used on his calls , but Dick Kirby would lather it on his calls. I prefer red over white because it holds onto the paddle longer. But i dont like the mess that red or blue make on the calls. I really like Rain Chalk which comes in white only.

The blue& red chalk seem to me to be of finer grain than white . I like the grittier white much better.

It's nice to see everyone's opinions. I have some boxes from Dr. Watkins that play better with blue over red and the same for my Jeff McKamey boxes. My Hudson hen boxes like red. Maybe it's just my chalk. I have the same blue chalk for quite some time but the red is fairly new.

red is messy,...but it is hands down the best chalk for a box call that I have found yet,...bites hold better and creates a better front end on the call.

I'm not a box call maker, just a player. It seems to me that some boxes like different chalks. I've got all colors , red, white, and blue, brown and orange. Just like some sound boards like chalk and some don't. I've got a long box that one side doesn't matter how much chalk is on the paddle, the other side plays better with just a scant amount. I had to find a happy medium on this box.

Started with sky blue sidewalk chaulk, then blue carpenters, then red. They all work, I like the sidewalk chaulk the best. I was told it had the least amount of wax in it, sky blue, of the sidewalk chaulks.

Me too! I like the brown chalk, but finding the original old chalk, is getting difficult.
