Title: Baseball Bat Turpin Caller
Post by: Shadetree Callers on June 09, 2013, 05:28:23 PM
A few years ago , my neighbor and friend , Miss Annie Hull , gave me a couple of old baseball bats that she has had since she was very young , and asked if I could use them for making turkey calls . I know I will catch heck from someone for cutting up this old bat , but she was going to give them to the thrift store if I didn't take them . I used the oldest one first and had to cut deep to get past the heavy patina and dents from all the rocks that Annie and her siblings knocked around since they didnt always have a ball . They lived on a rural farm about 10 miles from Dayton, Ohio and Annie said that she got the bat somewhere around 1940 . Bats are commonly made out of ash and this was some old growth wood for sure as the grain is extremely tight . I added some scraps that I saved from Scott Witter's burnpile , to finish off the caller. The body is ash , ipe and old barn chestnut. The lid is a sweet piece of redheart that Scott had no use for but it worked perfect on this one . Thanks for looking !
Bob

Bob just called me and I got to hear this call. Pure turkey for sure. It's got that classic Turpin bark and the red heart has a lot of bite. Great looking and sounding caller Bob. Can't wait to see what you do with the scraps  *cheers*

I too was fortunate to hear this caller today and it IS ALL turkey.  I really like the recycled idea and leave it to the scrap wood master to create something cool, functional and even purdy as well.

I play college baseball and recycle bats all the time. Great source of free, quality wood. As soon as somebody breaks one in batting practice, either maple or ash, I'm on it like a hawk. Great looking caller
