After a questioned was asked about declining turkey numbers, thought this would be interesting.
This year made my 29th year.

Only 11 or 12. There weren't turkeys around here when I was growing up. I still remember when they stocked turkeys, seeing them around but not being able to hunt them. Not exactly sure when the state opened the season to this area of the state.

I shot my first turkey in 1977, it was a fall bird(tom) when I was on an afternoon Squirrel hunt with a high school friend. Well, that got us both hooked and we started spring hunting also in 1978. I shot my first spring bird in 1979 with my 20 gauge H&R single shot "topper" model shotgun at 27 yards(paces) and my brand new Lynch 102 boxcall that my girlfriend bought me just days earlier for my 17 th birthday, it was the first time I ever used it in the woods. The "GOBBLER" was a three year old, with 1 inch spurs and a 10 inch beard and weighed in at 18 pounds, he came in off the roost at first light, it was the easiest kill I've ever had. I long for simple times like those again. We didn't even wear any camoflauge, just our brown canvas "small game" pants and jacket. I never even used "cami's" until I got out of the MARINES ,then I started using my leftover " woodland cami " uniforms. That was 1984 by then.

Started turkey hunting at age 14 and have been enjoying the trials and tribulations of the sport for 48 years. I still shake when an old gobbler sounds off or struts in front of me, and I am about pull the trigger!

Started when we only had a fall season in NC, in 1969. Killed my first turkey in 1976 (College in between). Guess that makes about 43 years.

28 years with some of my best hunting memories from dueling springtime longbeards.

Back in 89 I got serious about it. I hunted some growing up but we just didn't have many. I ended up here at Campbell and the chase was on. The first one I locked horns with was an old hemit that put me up and down the ridges. Been chasing the dream ever since. Just can't help it. I spend most of my time now introducing new hunters to the greatest hunt in the world. darn can't wait until the fall.

Posted this on another site and had quite a few first timers and a lot of less than 10 yr hunters. Just goes to show there is experience on this site... ;)

I shot my first bird 52 yrs. ago and never could kick the habit.

This might surprise some, but it has only been 6 years and I can't think of anything else I have done in the outdoors; bowhunting for whitetails, trout fishing, camping and canoeing all for the past 36 years that I enjoy more or get weak in the knees as the season approaches. I never knew anyone who turkey hunting before I started, hard to believe I know, but the paths of turkey hunting and my time outdoors just never crossed.

I can still remember the first scratchin' i ever saw , along with a few tracks. It was on a fall ginseng hunt when i was twelve. I was but a sapling the next spring when I got to hear my first spring gobbles in southern Ohio and that sound hooked me for life. Turkey tags came through a limited lottery system back then and i was lucky to draw my first tag early on. Bought my first Lynch style boxcall when i was 16 and wore it out for years after. Nearly 200 gobblers later, I still get a rush of adrenaline every time I strike a gobbler and get near cross-eyed when i get em inside 25 steps. lts been 33 years now and I look forward to many more years of hopping ridgetops and wading creekbottoms to reach a fired up gobbler.

I got married to my wonderful wife Martha in 1974. At that time I didn't know squat about turkey hunting. But her father soon showed me that turkey hunting was a lot of fun and so the chase was on. Got my first Big Tom hunting along side my father-in-law in 1978. Wish he was still around to hunt with. He knew how to hunt America's Greatest Game bird both fall and spring seasons. Its been fun trying to fool Mr. Turkey. 36 years !

I'm surprised actually, at how many ole turkey hunters we have on here.....I've caught the disease in 86 and hope to hunt them until I die....

I've hunted turkeys for 43 years and can't wait until next year.

Killed my first one about 25 years ago. Seen a bunch die in between. Guided several to their first birds and many memories made!!!!

have only been at it for 2 years. i am always fly fishing. i gave the trout a rest to try it whole heartedly. Well I am now suffering from Gobbler Addiction Disease.
