Title: Foggy morning gobbler..
Post by: Blackfalcon on May 07, 2013, 10:20:05 AM
It was foggy and drizzling this morning..and I wasn't sure if the turkeys would be gobbling...only one way to find out. Drove to a spot I had been to yesterday trying to locate a bird with a long box. Well..I stepped out of the vehicle and called with a trumpet...a gobbler hammered it with authority..game on!
I moved in a little ways and tried him again..it sounded like he had moved away...gave him the silent treatment for a bit..then tested him with the hen box..he went ballistic..played his game for a while..he kept moving back and forth and I thought for a while there might be two of them. He hammered every time I called...and then I played the silences trying to get him to come looking for me...it just wasn't working. He gobbled and gobbled but wouldn't commit.
Finally he drifted back and I decided to move. I went straight away from him then made a big circle to try and get to an area I thought he wanted to go.
A gobble let me know I was in good position and I moved up a tote road a bit closer...called softly with the hen box..he hammered it..scratched in the leaves and he gobbled at that. When he finally stepped into the old logging road..the game was over.
It was a grand hunt of almost three hours from start to finish...he gobbled just fine

Thanks guys! Bill, I have called some nice ones in with the new style, including a monster that shouldn't have gotten away, I'm too embarrassed to tell the tale! The trumpet I used today is the first one I made of all delrin, for rainy/snowy days. The way our season was starting (rained for weeks it seemed prior to our opener) I wanted to be prepared for anything!
The double is not for sale, neither is the hen box Mr Lyman..lol ..too many memories already with them. ;D

I can find a double on gun broker but I may need to cut snakewood lid blanks to have a hen box made.  *lol**cheers*

Congrats Dave!  I had a thick fog successful hunt last year and I'll never forget it.  I was lucky to have that fog disguise me while I stood up to shoot.  By the time I put my tag on the bird the fog was gone!  I like how you mention the gobbler "hammering".  It doesn't get any better than that!  Great story and thanks to the fog once again!

Thanks for the kind words guys! It was another foggy morning here..my first few soft clucks with one of my hybrid yelpers this morning..had an eagle come in and land about thirty feet away..a first for me..lol. It got real quiet after that and happened too fast to get any pics. I guess he was thinking turkey dinner was on the morning menu  ROTFLMBO
