Title: Killer new Crow Call from Shadow Turkey Calls
Post by: Shadetree Callers on February 27, 2013, 04:08:36 PM
Here are a couple little treasures I picked up from my good friend Gregg Guthridge . Gregg just released his new crow call that he has spent the last year developing . This call is awesome ! It will do everything a crow hunter needs in a call from realistic growls to screaming caws ! Also got one of his rabbit squealers for predator hunting . I do alot of coyote hunting and this one will be put to the test soon ! Thanks so much for the great calls buddy !!!

Nice calls Bob, I got those while I was there to. That preadator call will sure do the trick as well as the crow call.

He's a heck of guy too.  Are his crow call mouth pieces wooden and straight up custom or plastic manufactured?---Jason

Jason , the mouthpieces are custom moulded now and have his logo built in . I was skeptical at first because I like a wooden mouthpiece and Gregg always made really nice guts . I was very impressed with this call though and I love the growl in it . Anybody could use this call it runs so easy . I chose the cocobola wood with brown mouthpiece and I think it has a classy look to it .

Yeah, that call of yours looks sweet.  I hate plastic though...just aint got that custom appeal for me.  I bet Greg could make one with a hand made wood mouth piece if I asked him though huh.  I like him and his work so i wouldn't mind having me a crow'er from him.  Nice call.---Jason

I have made crow calls with wooden mouth pieces for over 25 years,  I have had this design in the works for sometime.  We put our crow calls thru some serious work outs during our crow hunts and tourneys.   That was in mind when I came up with this.   I tested this with the Gulvas boys from Dubois before I settled on this one concept.  we are in the process of putting a Pennsylvania crow hunting video together using this style call .    I have always preferred wooden to plastic, but now have changed my ways a bit   *cheers*

Greg,
what is the difference between the two materials as far as play that would make it distinctly important other than feel and custom?

Jason,

for starters
just like any game call, duck call, tube call, There is a proper way to blow them.  I have alot of guys come to my house that say they are use to blowing a crow call and stick the mouthpiece several inches into thier mouth while covering the end of the call, almost treating it like an owl hooter. totally killing the sound. and getting too much spit on the reeds, therefor making them stick.
Doesnt matter if it is plastic or wood or even treated wood, its going to stick eventually.
I tuck my lips up under my teeth and just barely touch the end of the reeds.

feel is personal preference, i round my sides off and flat on top of mouth piece.   This is what feels good to me.     I have used Buckners crow call for as long as I have known Mike, and his are more rounded as well...
Now comes the internal diameters.   This is all crucial for total design and sound....and your mouthpiece design has to match up with this part or you can get a really sour sounding call.   i have tried so many different variations and have boxes full of parts that didn't work out.
With my molded mouthpiece, im getting the same exact sound I wanted in my wood mouthpiece, without losing a thing.  Im also able to sell them cheaper, and still give them a custom made look

hope this helps ya
Gregg
