Can any one identify this wood, at first I thought maple, birch or beech, then saw some sycamore and thought it might be that.

Maple is my first choice......then Cherry.

I'm going to say it's cherry. The wood in the top has a lighter appearance like a maple but it probably the photo. I have a piece of cherry with a very similar quarter sawn grain. Some call it snake belly. Should finish up nice.

HMMM.... i have some snake belly and usually the sap wood looks that light but usually aint that much as far as i can remember, also it looks to light in color to be cherry, could be maple but looks to me like sycamore, heres a long box i made from some snakebelly cherry

Thanks for all the input guys, I know the pic isn't great. I haven't quite figured out how to post a good pic yet. The wood is lighter however. Here is one of my first calls I made a while back with it and the lid and base are cherry. Hope this pic will help show the light color in it.

No mistake it's maple and 1/4 sawn like Al said...will make some great lids.
