Title: I hit the wood jack pot

My Dad used to be a custom knife maker and he had a thing for finding the most beautiful wood. For the last few years Ive been pestering him to find it all and bring some to me. He came to town today bearing gifts. He had a block of old growth lignum vitae, a block of coco, some bubinga, but the jewel was a BOARD of rosewood. It wasnt just any rosewood....has tons of birds eyes in it. I sprayed it and the coco with a light mist of poly. Here she is. I cant wait to have some calls made out of it. He bought some of this wood back in the early 80s.

Last time you   hit the jack pot of something your dad had, you were going to send me some, did you forget?

No. I havent gotten in the garage to cut it up yet.  I got some for you. Now duck season is over, ill probably do it next week. I've got some stuff going to a couple people.

 Nice find....that's some fine pieces. What type of rosewood you got there....brazilian maybe..?  I'm sure somebody will know...It's pretty..

I don't think he can even remember. It's South American. Last week when he told me he had it, it was Brazilian. Today I said Honduran and he said yeah. It's been on a shelf for probably 22 years.

My collection. One of these isnt Dads, but he had made me a custom knife sheath for it. I remember as a kid, He would boil the leather in linseed oil and parafin wax and soak the leather in it. He would work the leather around the knife for hours. You can take any of these knives and turn them upside down without the knife falling out, but when you go to pull them out they slide like butter. I think the three that are his are micarta, coco, and rose wood. As you can tell they get used. That rosewood has probably skinned at least 100 different big game animals. I believe, both of these came off the same rosewood board and coco blank in my first picture

This is the only Bowie knife he made, and the last knife he made. He is a Vietnam vet and has deterating retnae due to agent orange. He started not being able to see the details in his finish work. He did everything by sight, never used measuring equipment, Just eyeballed it. He got mad at his lines on this knife, laid it down, and walked away. He never put the edge on it, and never started another knife. Im going to send it to someone one day to finish it. He made it after watching Crocidile Dundee.

Del your father made some beautiful knives and sheaths and the wood you have is outstanding.

Del I can see your dad was a very talented man, those are beautiful knifes, I use to make a few knife's myself. It's a shame he had to quite, I know how he must miss it.

That wood is sweet  -  make some really nice calls. Especially with that history. But those knives...especially from your Dad... *up*
