Wound up getting bit by another bug in December...this one can be just as contagious as turning...bow making...here is one that I have in progress...more pics on the way...its on the tillering tree now, preparing for final finish...
72" tip to tip, shooting for a 31" draw @ around 50-55lbs
linen based baking, Ipe core, Figured maple belly/body wood, walnut riser, rosewood tips...

how do you determine what wood to use?

well, straight grained woods, with no runoff for a "board bow" 3/4 x 2" board will do, 66-72" length tip to tip. Otherwise, getting a stave (split length of log) and caving it in is another method.
I ran down to Barnes and Noble and bought "Traditional Bowyer's Bible Volume One"...lots of great starter info, but mainly stave bow oriented. I will be getting volume 2 VERY soon.
If you watch any YouTube, check out BoarriorBows. Mike is an awesome resource! He has quite a few build alongs, including board and stave based. He even does a Osage Snake Bow! Its all about the grain!! Check him out, you'll see what I mean! There is another feller on there called twisted stave, and he's pretty good too!

so.....I went to the Kalamazoo Expo Center for the Traditional Archery show, and picked up a Hickory Stave, that was "roughed out" from Gary Davis. Its not done yet, but it is shooting...finished at 55lbs @ 30" draw, 68" nock to nock...I'll post more pics when i get the finish work done, with my arrows...

I've made 7 recurve bows and each one was fun and challenging, but man they take time!! I think I had over 100 hours into the last take down recurve bow that I built. Keep up the fine work. When you kill your first deer with one that you made yourself all that time is well worth it, trust me that was probably one of my most memorable deer hunts, even though it was just a doe!!

Tried to make a Recurve once, one limb was off, decided to leave the bow making to the pros. Just nothing better than Hunting with equipment you made. Congrats, we'll done. Roy.

Nice that you repurposed the string and serving from your grandpaps bow, he'll be with you on your hunts in spirit. Now wondering what game animals will you be using it on, and do you do competitive shooting with it? you got alot of people attention with this and the nice post, especially how you kept us "tuned In" during the process.
