Title: Gordon "Gordy" Olson "The Locator " !
Post by: Shadetree Callers on September 04, 2012, 01:24:48 PM
I am sure that most of you are familiar with "The Hatchet" call made by M.A.D. Calls . If not , look in a bass-pro catalog and you will find them . It is one of the most cleverly built calls I own . This call can be used one handed or run with both hands . It makes some of the sweetest purrs I have heard and it yelps nicely for a one-handed call , much better than a push-button will . It was designed by Gordon Olson from up in Minnesota and he licensed the call to M.A.D. who makes them from cheaper materials to cut costs on big production . Back in the 80's they were licensed to Ben Lee Calls . Gordy is still making these calls and if you call him I bet you could talk him out of one . Believe me , it is a well built call that sounds great and you will wonder how you can get so much call for so little cost ? This one is made from chestnut and it will have a place in my vest next spring ! Notice the Ohio quarter he added on my behalf . That's cool Gordy !

Bob

That call has been around for quite some time. I remember when Ben Lee had it in his line of calls. They are good calls!  *up* *up* *up*

Bill, I learned something today , I was a big Ben Lee fan and I never knew he had this type of call in his product line.  They only sold box calls, trough calls, tube calls and mouth calls in my neck of the woods. Thanks for that info.

Ben Lee called it "the sqwacker" . He made his from cedar and they are a bit different than Gordy's original .
He is still selling this call as far as I know and only charges a few bucks for them . They are a must have for any collection IMO.  His contact info. is

From your picture of the call, Lee's was tad larger but from the front side similar.

Bill , this one measures in right at 4" wide . I haven't looked at my sqwacker for awhile . The soundboard and striker are so unique . Kind of reminds me of something Pete Pulley might have come up with . Never ceases to amaze me at what a turkey hunter will come up with when given enough time alone in the woods ! Great little call for the money !
