Title: What's the difference between one siders and short boxes?

For those of you who make them or use them, what are the different characteristics of one siders compared to short boxes?   I don't have much experience with one-siders....

I plan to buy either a short box or one-sider for my father, as I noticed while home hunting with him earlier this spring, he is still using a box he bought for each of us when we first started chasing turkeys in 1980.

Il try to explain one sider and short box a one sider is a short box that works on one side when you run a one sider it closes up all the way to the other soundboard that is not round on the top like a regular short box because of that the box/sound chamber sounds different the lid on one sider is curved of center to get different stroke longer one I think one is one of the best  designs my hats off to Mr Lynch. hope this was some help ..not a trick question is it ? *lol*i'm no writer but i can make turkey call .

I have never run a one sider.  Here are some of Al's.

 You will notice the left side is higher and you only run it on the right side.  The left side has a low spot for your thumb to help with cutting.
What are the advantages?  That I can't answer.

I guess you could say a one sider and short box are both short boxes due to the length of the soundboards

I appreciate your response and it was certainly not a trick question.   ;)

I only have limited experience playing one siders at shows and such.  In my simple assessment, they run and sound pretty similar to short boxes, but I wanted some "expert" opinions.  Your points about the lid having different angles and the design perhaps inherently offering a longer stroke are well received.

Another way to ask may be what is unique and worthy about a one-sider design, compared to short boxes?  Can either do anything differently than the other?

I know there are lots of master callmakers and gurus on here that may be willing to shed some light before I jump in....

the cut out for thumb is ok but i dont cut or cluck on calls that way myself i run the lid dont  tap or hit it or put presure on it with my thumb .i lot of guys run them that way .
