Title: Special Turpin for a Special Friend
Post by: Jake St. John on May 11, 2012, 08:43:19 AM: I have been working on this one for a while. Posted the wood before starting on it in the General Discussion, since I had never run up on the Ambrosia Walnut. I have not made a Turpin Short box in 20 years, as my specialty is box Striblings, which are similiar. I hunted with an original like this for 13 years in Teak and Northern Maple. Oh what a fine box it was. My mentor got it from Tom Turpin after WWII. That call had a crack in the paddle near the top hat and it had a rattle and was very raspy. I have posted it before. It was an all time killer for me and my mentor. My son and Nephew have a great sounding Turpin short box that I made 20 years ago. This one has those two beat on the sound. It's got that sound to die for. It not only has the unusual wood but I decided to make the original top hat in brass. Mr. Jack's orginal had a pot metal top hat with 3 nails. Due to brass fitting that I worked down by hand, this one has 4 small nails. This is the fourth of a four call trade with my good friend Jeff McKamey. I hope to keep the trading still going, as this call will catch me up. Boy! Snakeboots can turn some calls out.
You will be receiving this one shortly Jeff, putting the finishing touches on it. Took it East of the Slash and one of hunters in camp offered a nice price for it. Hope those big ear boys can escort it Tenn.

Now , if the "big ear'd" boys will just see that it gets through UPS and to me---I will put it to great use.
