Ok, I'm thinking about pulling the trigger and trying to make my first box call. I've only ever used chisels and hand carving tools (and the dremel here and there) to do the very small amount of woodworking that I have done; haven't tried a turkey call yet. I'm slowly learning to use other tools that will make the job a little easier, and one day I will finally learn to use this lathe that I bought about a year ago! ::)
I want to start out with a Gibson-style box first. I have some blocks of cedar that would be great for it, and I can use my miter saw to cut them into the right shapes. I read that people typically carve, drill, or route out the sound chamber. I don't have a router (yet), so I might be a bit limited. Does anyone have advice for me, as to the best method for carving-out the sound chamber?
Thanks!

if your limited with tools you can make a glued call or use a hand drill and drill out the center of the box out then carve with chisel

I started making strikers with a pen knife and file. *lol*

Best advice? Get some wood and see what you can do. Look at several different calls and see what you like and dislike about each. Have fun. Having fun is what it's all about.
Now if you make a call that calls in a bird to your gun thats when the real fun starts.
I made two glue up box calls. You'll never see either although one has turkey blood on it. The other has my blood on it where the table saw kicked back. Broke my thumb. I won't be making a lot of box calls. I'll stick with strikers. *lol*

I actually do *lol* at your posts. Yeah, hopefully I'll be posting pictures of wood and not my (former) fingers. *aah*
