hello all:
here is a story for you. a few months back my good friend pete clare(turkey trot acres) called me and said he had an idea for this falls turkey hunt. j.t. byrne and i have learned to duck and cover when pete tells us he has an idea. however i have to admit sometimes they are good ideas. anyway this is the 50th fall turkey season in new york and pete's idea was why not dress in gear you would have worn back then. this has now taken off because everyone loves the idea. we all went on the look for dark brown or green bibs with dark canvas jackets to match. some of us are going to carry the guns that we started our hunting careers with. mine is a model 37 winchester 28 gauge full choke and i know i can kill a 25 yard and in shot with this gun so if i need to let some walk so be it. it has been fun looking for the right clothes and reliving memories of the past while doing so. it will be interesting to see what affect these clothes have on birds. may even need to go back to pulling a little cover up around us like the old days.
pete presented the idea to many of his customers at turkey trot and most of his fall hunts will be in retro gear. as our season progresses i'll try to keep everyone posted on results including pictures if i can get some young person to show me how to put them up here. have fun this fall and be safe. sooner

Now this will be cool to see how it unfolds. If you need any help posting pictures, you just let me know!!! I'd love to see all the retro gear.
With the way everything is "pushed" upon us in todays world, I sometimes wonder how people were so successful back then. I'm sure they did just as fine as we do today!
Lay the smack down on some birds and nothing like calling them up close and personal!!!

i cant wait to see pictures!!!. i was surronded by a flock yesterday some were less than 10 yards away.... blue jeans and a brown sweatshirt ;D

That sounds like a lot of fun. Hunting and back at the camp. Heck if you need some gear down here some of the old folk (no disrespect intended) still wear those clothes that came from a Sears Robuck Catalog back then. I could always borrow some from my neighbor and send your way! *up* *up*

My friend, the late Dwain Bland did it that way. Spring and fall. He even went so far as to go back to shooting SxS black powder doubles. And, he killed his share. He was quite a guy.

I like it ,,,,already got my new duds . I go by ''drabndouble'' . Silentk actually coined the phrase months ago ,,,,,guess I stole it didn't I .
I won't be using my double this fall , due to a commitment to take a longbeard with my Grandads '42 Winchester , .410,,,,mod. choke ,,,,it ain't been in the woods in over 30 years . 20 yards is my limit ,,,beyond that he can walk away .
The only camo I'll be using will be a facenet ,,,,unless someone can give me a better idea for covering my white hair and beard without using some cream . What ever , it must breathe like a net since I wear glasses.
One aspect of the ''drab'' clothing , is , I believe that it is more than sufficient to creat a ''blend in'' with most surroundings , while still ''revealing'' a human shape and motion when moving in the woods , which I think will creat a safer hunting situation .
Good luck to you fellers and ladies invloved with the ''RETRO HUNT''

I don't like a facenet either ,,,,,but I don't want to give some bonehead a chance to shoot at something white in hopes of a turkey .

It is really Humid here, may as well be Comfortable... It seems since I started Hunting this way, No ONE follows me anymore, I have the area all to Me'Self... 8)
I bet if you can get your picture in the paper of your "hunting style" and let them know where you hunt, there won't be anyone ever in the area to get in the way or scare off the wildlife! ROTFLMBO
