Title: Ambrosia Walnut ????
Post by: Jake St. John on April 03, 2012, 06:19:54 PM
I just got some native black walnut from near Van Cleve, Ms. last week and I quartered a log and cut one section down to call size and it looks like an ambrosia beetle discolored it.  I have never run into this in Walnut.  I have run into a lot of worm holes but not the discoloration associated with the ambrosia beetle.   Have any of you run into this.  This one teamed with with a piece of ambrosia maple that Tom Crook sent me will make one striking call.  Look forward to your feed back.

Mr. McKamey liked this combination, so I plan on doing a Turpin Short box for him since I am one behind in our trade from way back.

Jeff,  Making a little progress in this Exclusive Edition Ambroysia Call.  Knew you liked the progress pictures.   Next step will be a brass Top Hat with three brass nails as the original had (only it was pot metal).  Send you a picture of it when it gets ready to tune.  Note the Snake pattern in the Maple.  Makes it a one of a kind.  And this one will have a #1 on it my friend.  Not hard numbering the only one.

Tuned it up last night. ----- Since we will make one last ditch effort this weekend East of the Slash, I'll field test it and see if I can put a notch in it for you Mr. Snakeboots.
