When you are able to call in 9 bearded birds in one morning... 3 of them nice longbeards!!! Unfortunately, they just would not break the 20 yard line and give my nephew a clean shot for the 410. I had 12 yards as the max yardage for him.
We had one drumming and strutting 10 yards behind us, but in the woods and too much brush for an ethical shot. He did get to see a great showing and was super pumped!!!
All this on a 120 acre farm. I hope they stay there and do not move. 30+ birds on the farm!!!!
6 jakes in the bunch so next year should be a great 2 year hatch!!!
I needed the time in the woods. Been rolling out our new phone system and it's killing me. I'll be glad when this is over!!!

Great stuff! Props to you for teaching him to stick to the limits. That is fun any way you slice it!

Porter , get that boy shooting a 20 ga . instead of the .410 wounding machine ! My girls have shot one since they were 10 so no excuses about being too young for it . Just my honest opinion but , a .410 should never be used on big game especially turkeys . Then he will have an honest chance at ranges out to 40 yds and won't have to pass 'em up ! Congrats on getting him in the woods !! *ride*

I second the above statement. I tried a .410 with my 5 yr old son last year and it was to much gun. This year he wanted to shoot his first duck, so I cut off the stock of a Mossberg Youth 20 and added some padding to help recoil. Did it thump him when we practiced shooting old duck decoys, sure did. But after a few more shots and getting it shouldered better, he was good. He was nervous until the first duck died. Same thing on the turkeys this year. We let 2 gobblers walk at 20 yards because he was nervous about the gun. We talked more about it, and I let him know the prize far out weighs the kick and you will never feel it shooting at a turkey. He killed his first one a week ago. Walking back to the truck he told me, "Dad, you were right, I didn't feel anything shooting that turkey." I just explained to him that we need to put enough "kill" on the turkey if we are going shoot at one. He always had the option to just go with me another year, but after I shot my first bird of the year with him, he would have nothing to do with waiting. Good luck, and thats awesome that you have the youngster out there!

yeah Porter----make it a 20 with a good recoil pad---they will never know the difference---thats what my girls shoot !!....ya know---the little girly little cheerleaders ---heck they are even shooting Nitros, but they dont know it at the time *lol*
