fall 2011
« on: November 30, 2011, 09:18:24 AM »
well it's over and now i'm starting to miss it already. our ohio season started out well got bad in the middle and ended real well. part of this was weather related and part because i was going to the same turkeys to many times. we ended with 17 birds harvested and way to many missed. mike is posting the pictures for me so i'll be a little confused about which ones i sent him. i know one was a picture of ron bolyard, gary anderson and i with three birds. chip gross a writer harvested the bird i have and took the picture. this hunt was a dandy. we went to one of my favorite ridges and parked the mule. we were not 200 yards into the woods when i told everyone to hold up because i could see on the gps that cutter the puppy was doing little circles at 200 yards. she finally worked it out and at 350 started barking and barked the better part of 5 minutes till she was over 500 yards away. we croosed the gorge and met up with her on the way up the other side. i knew when we met her she was beat because i leashed her and she just layed over on her side and panted for breath. after she recovered we made the top of the next ridge. i dropped ron and gary then chip and i went out a couple hundred yards and dropped down over. chip and i were not set up and ron had shot a young gobbler. i guess three calls on the paddle and it ran over him. i made a couple calls and a bird answered below us. chip raised his gun and i called soft on the paddle. 25 yards to our right a bird clucked that had come in silent. as luck would have it the bird walked behind some brush, chip turned and when she walked out number two was down. chip and i stayed there and called in two different young gobblers for pictures while gary and ron worked another bird for gary to harvest. looked at my watch and it was 45 minutes after we had set down. one of those hunts you remember. chip was doing a story so we were there another 45 minutes for pictures and the entire time we had birds calling from all directions. those birds must have been spread all over the woods feeding when cutter went screaming through the middle of them.

another picture is gary bunofski and i with the old girls gia and keekee. this was our last hunt and was also one to remember. we hunted a farm that i had not hunted and knew there were birds. to hunt this farm you have to start by walking up the stress test hill. half way up we unleashed the girls and 5 minutes later we heard keekee barking. i knew by the barking it was old gobblers and soon we saw the scratching to confirm it. at the same time we heard her barking again at 250 yards and this was a family group. 10 minutes later when we reached end of the stress test gia started barking 300 yards to our left. now we had three flocks of turkeys broke in a hundred acres. jimmy and i went out and over to keekees breaks and mike and gary dropped down the left side to gia's break. mike and gary had birds calling for 20 minutes not knowing which one would finally come into range. finally the first bird to call broke and came across a grown up field right to them and number one was down. i was about to move in with them so before i left i got real aggressive on the paddle call and an adult gobbler took our hats off at 60 yards. toned the paddle down to gobbler talk and two or three answered together. i shut up and saw three gobblers cross below us. a couple of clucks and i saw them step up on the bench below jimmy. i was laughing so hard i could not control myself because jimmy's barrel was buncing up and down 2 inches from excitement. all i could see was three black figures thru the brush at 35 yards and i told jimmy you better kill one. then the barrel really started to move and i grit my teeth. he shot and i saw the bird running to the left and yelled at him to kill him. this time he hit the mark and number two was down. i was laughing so hard as he and keekee raced for his bird. when he came back he told me he had two adult gobblers and his young gobbler standing there at 35 yards. he had not cleared a dead fall up before he set down and he told me that kept him from killing the adult birds. that was fine because he was shaking too bad to fill his tag out as it was. i know everyone is not a dog person but the combination of turkey dogs and turkeys being called to the gun is my first love.

Birds are alot more vocal in the fall and I also like the fact that you have choices in the fall also. If you want to take males that's fine, females that's fine too. IMO it's more relaxing and there's more action involved and don't forget the dog work. There's nothing like watching the dog start to get excited and the feeling you know what is coming next.  *dance*

Alright...Alright
ya just had to go there didnt ya Silverspur.
I want ya to know that the hunt was going just fine til.......(see pic below).
Ya dont think I had the rig loaded with too many calls causing Marling to think the Gator was lighter than it actually was do ya  ??? ;D ;). Probablly should have hid em elsewhere---kinda thought he would never look there checking up on me  *lol*.
The hunt was great as usual !!! Its the highlight of my season now. Getting to spend time in the woods with Marlin and Ronnie, and even Bullock is cherrished. Thanks for the kindness Marlin for allowing me to share the kids and the woods again my friend.

Jeff
Did I tell you I came hone one day and had eight text messages and three voice mails from by buddy steve mann. He said he had the mule stuck. I did not even ask where. Just got on tractor and there he was. He made it about ten feet further than we did.

You Convinced me Marlin, Getting Cutter was one of the best things for me.  It made me hunt more and longer, Hunting with old friends and family Made it even better. Getting out with some youth hunters was speical too, although we didn't  score on the youth hunts, Seeing there faces when we where calling was pretty neat. We only got seven birds but I'll have to tell ya, Cutter and your longbox is almost unfair. Already looking forward to next year, going to try to hunt New York  more so I can hunt Sundays, and the whole month of Oct. People are saying that they are going to let us hunt sundays to here in Pa, I hope so.
