Turning Green Wood, What Is The Point?

I thought I would try turning a few platters. Why do people use green wood to turn platters and bowls. I would think it would be easier to turn a bowl or platter from wood that has been properly dried. I would not think of turning a pot call from green wood. This is a new area of wood turning for me.

They turn them green for a couple of reasons. It's way easier to turn green wood than dry wood. When they turn them there only rough turning so the wood blank drys faster. Then there put back on the lathe for a finale turn after drying. I just turned a apricot bowl, the wood was dry. Probably took 3 times longer to turn than a green blank.

Dave thanks for the explanation. Normally how longer is the drying time after the rough turning?

It depends on the wood type, how wet it is when it's rough turned and temp were there stored. I've heard of guys putting a bowl in a paper bag while it's drying. Here's a little info,
