I got 2 gorgeous box calls from Scott Witter back in October, and pilgrims, they both talk serious turkey!
The first is a parquet call made of walnut over popular with a 80/20% sapwood/heartwood: the lid is yellow sapwood with green heartwood inlays, and the box has purpleheart and popular spacers, purpleheart inlays with sumac on the ends. An abundance of turkey talk comes cries out from either the left or right rail with ease, and Scott is on target, the left is a higher pitch and the right is loud and proud! By adjusting the tilt of the lid and pressure, you can easily vary the pitch and tone! It produces excellent hen yelps (nice and raspy on the right side), clucks, tree yelps and kee-kees!
The second shortbox is made from Central Africa Honduras mahogany and does not carry the same "attittude" as the first, but it produces some sweet yelps, clucks, purrs, and again, the pitch can be easily changed by adjusting the angle and pressure!
Both calls are extremely easy to work and produce sweet turkey talk for locating those elusive longbeards or for easing him in those last couple feet! Great job Scott and these calls will be part of my call collection when I hit the woods, and expect them to be a threat to the turkey population long after I am gone!
