Matching wood for Chestnut, soundwise ?

What woods do you like matched up with a Chestnut box?  And again for a Chestnut paddle.  I have a bunch that I will be working shortly.  Tophy_Taker showed a chestnut box with a walnut paddle.  That was one of Mr. Stiblings combinations with similiar persimmon, but he usually did the walnut box with persimmon paddle.  Very loud combination, that is very effective between the Ms. River Levee's (when we have birds and not covered by water  )

I like Walnut, only one on chestnut I have heard that I like and I love it!

Here are a couple of Chestnut box calls. The top one was made by Lee Smith and has a Walnut lid and the bottom one by Tim Clayton and has a Cherry lid. Both are fine sounding calls.

John have to agree with the above.  Walnut and or Cherry.  I do have one with Osage and love it, but I'm sure you are not wanting to hear that one

         I have several chestnut boxes w/ assorted lids.....A cherry lid, a walnut lid, an all chestnut, one w/ an osage lid, a cedar lid and one w/ persimmon.....

        My favorite is the chestnut/chestnut w/ the persimmon a very close second.

Well I don't have an answer to that question at this hour. But I do have a walnut box I'm fixing to put a chestnut lid on. I hope they match up because this box has been being difficult to tune!

Well the little lady still need a little touching up but this had a good outcome!! I built two lids today. The first never made it to the call. I had let my little lady Sirious out of her kennel to do her buisness. Well with her in season the boys got excited and were trying hanky panky. I smacked one on the rear, mistake. Dead paddle, split it half into. Second paddle worked out a whole lot better. Great sound and Volume which had been missing in all the other paddles I had tried on this walnut box. I try to get her finished up tomorrow and post a picture.

I have seen it used with all the woods list above.. plus some of the exotics like purpleheart also...

Purpleheart makes a great lid for Chestnut. But in the style of call you build and how it has to be played (Turpin style), I would think Walnut would be the best match.

I took a piece of the Baby Doll house walnut that little Eustis Winn III gave me, matched it up style wise, with his  Original Stribbling semi-long box, and put one of my chestnut paddles on it.  Sound wise, it is very similiar to his orginal.  He harvested  a longbeard last year with 1 1/2 spurs with it and wanted a couple of calls similiar in sound.  I think he will be please with this one.

Never was too fond of chestnut as a paddle but have used it on cedar, butternut and a few other softer woods successfully. Tighter the grain the better.  I do like a chestnut body with a walnut or cherry lid. Cherry having just an edge over the walnut.....for me. Good looking call.
