As for the tone issues,JC Reeds will vary slightly from one to the next, they can be tuned by blading. You might consider using a 9/32" straight flute reamer to consistently seat the sleeve, varying pressure exerted on the sleeve can also affect the tone, too much pressure can even impede the vibration of the reed or cause it to lock up. Drilling and backing out a drill bit can change the diameter each time you do it.
Barrel length and diameter, how much you flare the bell can also affect the volume, tone and pitch, in general, longer barrel, deeper pitch, more flare, more volume, etc. Blading deepens the tone and adds rasp. It takes a little experimentation to get the sound you want, but that is what makes it fun!
