I was 17 years old in this one so this would have been spring 1995. I remember this day vividly!!! I was on my way to a location that noone hunted because they said it didn't have any birds on top of that bluff. I had walked it before and found feathers so I knew they were in the area.
I started in the bottom of the holler and barely made it 30 yards when I heard this strange sound like a sick calf. I turned to my left and a small bear cub was squallin around. At the same time I heard a noise to my right...... old momma bear was standing up and looking me over. Now all I had with me was my grandpa's old remington and some #4's. I knew if she decided to come at me I would have to unload and take my punishment after putting some copper in her! What happened in the next few seconds seemed like an eternity! I didn't know it but my uncles bloodhound had trailed me. Boy that old hound tore into that momma bear and things got a little crazy. Now mind you, I love a good dog but I wasn't about to stick around and help him with the fight. I figured if he was dumb enough to take on a bear, well it was his own fault!!! I took off running up the hill (dont know why I chose the slowest route...). Once I got up the hill I didn't hear any more sounds of fighting so I figured, well, I'm already out here so I might as well start to calling LOL.
I was using my uncles favorite call, Lynch's Jet. Man was that call sweet sounding! It was only a few minutes and I heard something in the leaves. Out popped this blue & white head from behind a bush. He took one step into a clearing and I blasted those fedrals his way. Dang it, I must have missed because he took off running and putting down the holler. Man was I dissapointed! I started to walk away and all of a sudden I heard some flopping. I looked over and wouldn't you know it, I downed one! I only saw the one bird so I had no clue his smarter and now educated buddy was right behind him.
Not a monster bird but I will never forget that hunt! Oh yeah, the dog was fine. He came and found me as I was picking up the bird.
