Screwing a great looking call up....
« on: September 14, 2009, 08:07:45 PM »
If any of you need pointers or want me to post how to screw up a great looking pot I will be glad to.  :'(

I had just got done sanding one, was putting the final hole in the bottom, dropped it and broke off a little peice from the top edge. Seriously, IMO it was one of the better looking calls I have turned. Makes me sick. I'm gonna get my dad to finish it anyway and if nothing else keep it around here.

I guess it makes me more mad that I only get to spend about 2 hours a week in the shop on average. Between work, family, church and just general running around I have to make every minute count. So needless to say, I wasted an hour. Call making is like golf to me, when you hit a good shot it's the greatest thing on earth, then when you tank one, it's the worst.

Thats must have been the cocabola pot your dad was telling me about.  Ouch. Adam I'd just like to thank you for those two calls you sent me today. The copper and glass calls are great. The claro wood real sets them off. You did a fine job. They sound great. Keep up the good work *up*
Thanks
Bruce

I appreciate the kind words and I hope you like em. It's always good to hear feedback.

Had it been that cocobolo pot I would be selling all my stuff right now! ;) That cocobolo pot he and I turned is some of the most beautiful wood I have worked with. He better get rid of it before I see it totally finished or it will go in my vest.

Adam... I'm not much help in the call making business, but you learn from your mistakes and it makes you stronger.  No one is perfect and we are all human.  I mess up daily in life and I know you'll take this incident and make sure it doesn't happen again.

You would think I would have learned that from the first half dozen times I have screwed one up!  *aah* It happens. I just use call making as a way of helping me unwind. It's also a good way to do some wood work and spend some more time in a common intrest with my dad. I'm not looking to be famous or shoot the moon, I just want to make a great sounding call and have fun doing it. I'm sure there will be plenty of other "learning opprotunities" ahead of me.

I have screwed up a bunch of callers (more than I care to admit)....But you have to learn from each one.  Here are a few of my "screw ups" from early in my call making career.  I keep this photo around for when I start to get down, I remember "It can be and once was worse!!"

Lee,
isn't that call in the upper right corner the one you sold me??? *bannana*

It does suck when that happens!!  And with the price of wood being so high, it hurts in the pocket book too.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck

As far as Lee's dud's go, i'll bet they still sound good!!

There's a good thread to start, "Show us your junk pile".  It happens.  Every call you make hones your skills for better things to come. Keep on it!

Got that right Richard. It a mystery sometimes why a pot just don't "have it".
