Purpleheart wood

I got some purple heart wood about a week ago, it apeared to be more Brown than purple, now after sitting for a week the purple color seems to be coming in, does purpleheart get its color and darker as it ages? i got little planks that are 12"x12"x3/8" they were pretty well bundled up with plastic wrap, the outside plank surfaces were exposed to the air an appear to be quite purple.

Just set them in the sunlight and the color will appear. When you first rip it or machine it, it will appear brown in color, but after a few days the purple color will come back

Cook it in the oven!
You never will see the beautiful purple that purpleheart can exhibit until you cook it, in my opinion.
Do a google search for "cooking purpleheart wood."
It is really amazing. The first time we cooked some, my little (then) 5 year old grand daughter went nuts!

 I've seen some turn black, but I'm not sure why.....I have some purple heart flooring that was given to me a while back that is still very purple in color.

We just bought some hardwood flooring (Brazilian walnut) and I went to pick up the second shipment today. I asked the guy if he ever had any busted boxes of wood or samples or other stuff he couldn't use and of course he didn't.  :( BUT, he found a couple of sticks of 2 1/4" x 2 1/2" that were used as stickers and gave those to me. *cool* Can't wait to cut into that stuff!

Goes to show... it never hurts to ask! *up*

Ooops... those 2 sticks were purpleheart!


I planed them down smooth this past Monday and they did, indeed come out brown. I just put them up on the rack for future use and they are both already purple again. Guess purpleheart works kinda like cocabolo. The color will come back in a few days.

 I'm confused...I have purple heart that has turned black ..why...and I've never seen cocobolo lighten...In my shop it always darkens...help me out here...

Not sure about the black prupleheart, KP, but the cocobolo I referred to just lost its vibrant color when I cut it, planed it or sanded it. But in a few days, the color was as vibrant as ever. Don't know if you would call that lightening or darkening. Sorry for the confusion.

What gives purpleheart its color, anyway? and what makes it change to purple? Does more of this pigment make it darker? Is your piece just extra rich in pigment?
