Are these osage apples?

I ran across these the other day while hunting. Ive never seen any before,just pics. I was suprized when I saw them. I didnt know they grew in south Alabama...Im gonna try to take some pics of the tree,but may have to wait until spring,and the leaves come out.

Hedge apples, Horse Apples, Osage apples... whatever you call 'em they fell off of a bodock tree... or a bois d'arc tree... or an osage orange tree. *wha* Its the fruit off that yella wood tree that Porter likes so much! RkLu

Thanks for the replys yall...Ive heard em being called horse,and hedge apples...I just wanted to make sure of the type of tree...I want some of that yella wood LOL. Ive cut some yella wood down here, but we always called it mulberry. It mostly grows around lake edges,and the wood is real yella. Ive never seen A osage tree around here,but I did have an old timer tell me he used osage for fence post.Hard as iron,and they would last 50 years...Ive got to go back and identify the tree,if I can,and harvest it,if its not too big...Thanks for the info.

Hope you've got a good saw and a couple of sharp chains, then! That stuff is VERY hard and very dense. That tree is gonna work your butt off getting it out! Seriously, set your trailer up well and watch your load. Osage will squat your springs and rub your tires on your fender if you're not set up for extra clearance.

Oh,... watch those thorns! They used them as nails in cottonwood back when they settled the prairie.

Horse apples or hedge apples in OK.....Barefoot is right you better have a sharp saw!! It will dull a chain saw fast!!

That's what you've got no doubt.

Mulberry does have a yellow wood, but with a little bit of green tint to it.  It's a tad bit darker than Osage.  Most Osage is bright yellow when it's first cut clean.  Enjoy!!  It's a prize and worth the effort.

watch those thorns ---like snake fangs and everywhere---get ya some serious leather gloves and cover up good.
A bit of more good advice---dont tell porter where it is !!!!
