Collecting Calls

I have collected baseball and football cards since I can remember maybe 4 or 5 years old and I still love it. Mostly because of my love for the sports and the nostalgia. But if money was not an issue call collecting would become my new hobby of choice. Man I look at the work (even the new field versions) and just say what if. We have some talented people in this sport and on this board. I am just 30 years too late. When i get a call I sit and look at every detail. It is fascinating. Man this is fun.

It is true, some members have EXTREMELY impressive collections.  I really didn't want to start a collection, but slowly but surely, I am starting to collect custom calls.  You can start out with a few pots or maybe a box call or trumpet a year and before you know it, ya gots yer self a little collection started.

I have a pot and 3 trumpets on the way.  What am I going to do with all of these.

You are never too late. I believe the best is yet to come. The beauty of call collecting, which has been bolstered by eBay, is that you can start a collection on any budget. I started with a used Lynch 1960 box call that I paid $7 for at Curry-Thomas hardware in Jacksonville, FL. I had no idea what I was getting into! Just jump right in and enjoy the hobby. The fact that you can hunt with them is an added bonus.

Turkey Commander , I did that for 40 years plus with 2 calls and basically only used one. I am talking about the craftsmanship in call building not turkey hunting. I believe that most of what I have would kill a turkey at the drop of a hat. I hate diaphragms by the way. Just saying! My sons love um!

Mike, I agree with Preston. It is never too late to start collecting Turkey Calls or anything else for that matter! It may seem a little overwhelming at first. I would suggest that you call and talk to several Call Makers have then play some calls over the phone. You can also check out E-Bay to find some good deals on older calls. I have picked up several great Calls off of E-Bay! I would also suggest that rather than trying to get one of everything. Maybe pick out your favorite type of Wood and then have several Call Makers make you a call out of that type of wood! Once you get several calls made out of that type of Wood, pick another type of wood and start another collection of calls. Before you know it you will have a fine collection of calls!

   I can tell you collecting calls can become very addictive. The only thing that slows me down is $$$. I see calls everyday I would like to own. So one thing lead to another and after buying about 50 I now make my own and its even more addicting. I now have a new respect for the work these callmakers put into their calls. Finishing up the perfect call is no easy task.I can't wait to hunt with some of mine. That will be the icing on the cake......
