Gobbler Yelping

Gobbler yelping is a very deadly call, we use it alot in the fall, and i've called alot of lone gobblers in during the spring as well.  I do however think that it is the one call that makes a guy sound like a "guy" instead of a turkey,...if not practiced and presented right.  It's not just as simple as slowing down your regular yelp or drawing it out more, or making it deeper.  In our competitions, there are only a handful of guys who can nail a true gobbler yelp,...it's just that hard.  Chris Parrish, Brian Gulvas, Denny Gulvas are some of the best i've ever heard.  It must have a beginning, middle and end, like your regular hen yelp, but the tone, and rythm are a sound all their own.  I guess what i'm saying is, don't settle for just sounding like a guy,...listen to some real birds and go with that.  I have one slate call that gets "close" but what works best for me is a 5 reed mouth call in a ghost cut.   good luck.

Pat, That is a very interesting post for a number of reasons.  Thanks for posting.    While in Nashville, I should have got Charlie to run his gobbler yelp, I think I ran mine on my old box for my new friend .  He is one likeable guy, that every turkey hunter wants to know.  I am sure you are also.  On your post you mentioned a slate and a 5 reed ghost cut.  If you will call me at 662-335-7523, at your leisure, (after the season), I would love to hear them.  I know I do not have an exclusive.  M.L. Lynch put a fine gobbler side on his World champion, I lost mine on my first few hunts.  But the sound stuck out.  I consider mine one of a kind.  I would like to hear the slate and 5 reed ghost cut (send me one, and I'll return the cost plus shiping + $5.00.). 

Thought I would include a picture of a gobbler that I killed last year at the beginning of the season.  This old bird was in an airstrip on a Ms. river hunting club that I hunt.  We pulled up to the gate of the airstrip and watched him and his 4 hens parading about halfway down the strip.  My hunting partner let me out and I had about 30 minutes to plan my opening sequence on this old boy and his hens as I walked the woods on the west side of the strip.  I decided on a fast paced 4 note hen yelp right side and a strong cut, pause a couple of seconds and do the gobbler yelp.   After I crossed the half way road to the airstrip and set up in the woods, 50 yards from the strip.  I got ready and  started the sequence.  When I finished, the hens were going crazy.  Coming back on them as fast as I could, I did the same sequence.  Silence.   5 minutes later, he could be seen entering the woods 50 yards from me at edge of the airstrip.   I waited and he half gobbled.  I said nothing and got my gun on my knee, when he got behind some thick stuff.  3 minutes later he closed the 40 yards and I shot him at 28 steps.  Where his hens went, I have no idea.



The ones on the left in the spur and beards picture were killed the nest AM.  I will admit, those spurs were killed with patience, a big rounder and a 3 note yelp in flat delta river country.

Sorry, I must say that I am sorry.  I thought you said Charlie Parrish, a friend of mine and you said Chris Parrish, that I do not know. Maybe I should know him, but I do not.  This internet has the effect of making a lot of statements say one thing and the intent is another.  Anyway, I'm going to sign off, cause it is way tooooooo late for an old turkey hunter to be on this site.  But it is a great site, as I hope you agree to that.
