Back in the mid 80's I was hunting in the southwest Ms. I drove in this large soybean field and next to the timber their was 4 mature toms with 8 to 10 hens. One of the hens had a lot of white so I drove past them after they went in the woods. By then I was excited ,gather my gear off in the woods I went. They had went behind a small levee . It must have been 100 yards to the creek. I slipped in their toward where the turkeys had went. In the swamp it was wide open. I saw them strutting 100yds in front of me. Now was the time I reached for my camo glove and headnet. Wouldn't you know it I had left it in the truck.
I found me a small log and laid on my belly. It was 10am and I had to be at work by 12. No camo gloves and I was wearing a gray cap. I got my friction call out..... called and called. Finally after about 30 minutes and old hen made here way 30 yds in front of me. Stutting 40 to50 yds were the big toms. All of sudden something landed between my shoulders. I just knew I was going to be spurred by a big tom that I had heard behind me.
I came up off the ground , turkeys went everywhere. It was a big male bobcat.!!! Turkeys flew and I was stunned and so was the bobcat that morning. I told the landowner and he laughed. He said I should be glad it was a bobcat insteed one of those wild hogs.
Two days later I went back and bagged a mature tom. 1.25in spurs--11 in beard 19.5 lbs . It was all worth it.
