doubled up
« on: October 30, 2010, 05:17:23 PM »
This morning started out slow and cold.   ;)

The area I was hunting is a hit or miss type of area.  The bird were slow this morning, nice cold October morning with temp 39 and clear.

I got a couple of birds to answer from the road but the only problem they were in the impact area.  Seeing how this was expected I started doing a loud lost call and then some kee kee's.
Got back in the truck just drove away from them, knowing it would take them awhile to come hunting for the hen.  I went and checked out a wood line that runs between two corn fields.  After having no luck over there about 9 am I decided to see if I could drive back around and locate some birds.

Low and behold I got back over where I heard those birds at daylight and I seen some birds out in the woods just feeding on the hunting side within my area. :o

I drove up about 400 to 500 yards up to this grass field in the direction they were working to and slipped out into an Oak flat and got set up and started to working a trumpet call.  After awhile of yelping and clucking with some kee's thrown in for good measure.  I see the birds and the larger hen was looking hard for me and seem to want to work to my left away from me at an angle.  I pulled out a box call and hit it a time or two an started throwing out some light kee's and low yelps on a trumpet they just couldn't stand it.  I let them walk in at about 25 yards and I picked out one of the bigger one and dropped the hammer, she hit the ground dead and the rest flew up in the air and came right back down. They started putt'ing and so I just switched over onto one of the other birds and drop her to.

All in all I had a great morning.
