Where I come from that's called Poke Salad. My Grandma had us walking around with garbage bags filling them with the leaves. She would pressure cook and can them. It tastes like mustard greens. I do not recommend trying to cook it unless you know what you are doing!!!
 It can be very TOXIC  :ghost: if not done right.

The berries can be used as a dye as well. The old timers & natives used it them that way as well.

Just make sure you pick that stuff in the spring if you want to eat it. Cut it while it is still short and it can be pretty tasty.

You can eat it until it starts to turn purple, then it is poison.
Boil the green leaves, pour the water off, add fresh water then boil again. That's how we cooked it in the scouts.
Kind of like boiled spinach.

Pokeberry...for sure. Any Bears in your area? They love them when they turn purple. Like Zumer said, turkeys do too. Plant a bunch where you hunt. Great feed in the Fall and the birds will do the rest...planting seeds all over the place!

It is a pretty good green cooked when young.
