Scouting trip
« on: September 07, 2009, 04:49:17 PM »
I made it out this morning to scout a new piece of property. I had looked over maps of it and had an idea where to get started. About 15 minutes into the walk I came over a rise and a flock of 8 poults and hens took off flying in different directions. I wasn't in a big hurry so I sat down and waited a bit. After a while they started kee keeing and carrying on. They made all kinds of noise for 10 minutes before regrouping.
I don't care what anyone says, when they get going in the fall it's just as exciting as in the spring. I walked around for another two hours and found plenty of sign, should be a good fall.

October 1st can't get here fast enough. It's going to be a great fall. I have a trip lined up with a member from this forum, another trip to tag along on a hunt with dogs, and two weeks of vacation time I have to use before the New Year.

keee keee keee.....keee keee yelp yelp yelp..... gobble gobble.....BANG RkLu

Yesterday evening I took the double and walked across the road to try a few doves . There is a 26 acre patch of tobacco over there with two sides bordered by small woodlots . As I reached the first woodlot the doves exploded out of the dead ash trees . BANG,,,miss,,Bang,,winged one , and as it fell I heard something off to my right and don't ya know it was a young turkey flying . It only flew maybe 20 yards and landed in the tobaccy again . I eased up and began looking for my dove . I heard a kee kee. I broke open the double and hung it backwards on my shoulder , squatted down beside a big tobaccy plant and let out a whistle in kee kee fashion . Immediately the ol' hen began yelping. Each time I would kee kee , she would yelp . Soon she is clucking low between yelps . I just kept it up until both hens and all the young were making racket . Kee kees , clucks and plenty of yelping . I held off on my kees and things quieted down . I slowly dropped my left hand to the ground and did some scratching and flipping little dirt balls onto the tobaccy plants. It  worked ,,,,here they all came . Cautious and calling all the way . They all reached a spot where they could eyeball the spot where I was calling from and decided it didn't look right I suppose . They all turned slowly and retreated back the way they came in .
Don't worry fellers , this is a place I CAN hunt, anytime I want , but I won't be turkey hunting there. But I couldn't pass up the chance to call in a flock .
My whistle did the trick , even though in comparison to the real birds , it was lousy . Nevertheless they came to the call . ;D
