Man, wouldn't it be nice to have a custom calls magazine

I've always thought that it would be pretty neat if there was a monthly/bi-monthly magazine devoted to custom calls, the callmakers, and history of calls. There are magazines for everything else out there, why not calls?

I like the idea.  It would be great to have a featured callmaker every publication and do a complete story on them.

I have thought about the same thing until I started looking at quality Magazine Printing...The cost are high,but I believe people would buy it...its the start up cost thats a gamble until u get your subscriber base. The printing on Newspaper style Paper would be the way to go.  RkLu

OH...I dont get a single mag anymore.....75 pages of advertising and 3 articles...lol *wha* *wha*

The hard part is, with todays way of doings, you have to have enough on your website to have people want the magazine, but not so much that you deter the purchasing of your magazine.

I think it would be a great idea, but look how much most of the local newspaper are struggling :(  The startup cost would be huge and you'd have to work your tail off for a good subscriber base! 

Now an online only version... I think you could make some money on that!

I'll have to second that. Seems mags will let any one advertise anything just for the money. Last year I got a free 1 yr for Outdoor Life, so I had them send it in my daughters name. She was so excited when they came in the mail. But for the life of me I couldn't come up with a answer for " daddy whats male enhancement?" *aah*

... yep'r - sure seems like there's a substantial side to the huntin' industry that will just about do; & say; anything for a the almighty dollar ... :-\
The commercial side of it just s*cks, in my opinion - I'm sure that's why I enjoy the world of Custom Turkey Calls so much - nice break from all the exploitation & money grubbin' for the most part ... ;)

... well, back to the Custom Calls Journal topic - I sure would find a place on my coffee table for 'em !!! ... 8) 8)

I couldn't let this one go without a comment:

As a past editor/publisher/owner of an Ontario, Canada outdoors magazine I can tell you that minimal start-up costs are $1.5M (in Canada anyway) - logistics (field editors, regional reps, sales, travel for content, etc.) on top of that - advertising is what keeps you afloat, not subscription numbers, that doesn't cover costs - as a publisher you will and are bound to take any and all advertising dollars that come your way - if you don't your competition will. 
In short, it takes a bottomless set of pockets to keep a magazine afloat.  It is a gamble for the fist 5 years and odds are 65/35 you won't make it and even more in this present economy.
There are a lot of great ideas out there but without the bankroll to back it up, they never get off the ground.
It is said that the most expensive real estate in the world is the graveyard - that's where many ideas that could have cured cancer, diabetes, world peace, etc. have been buried and ideas that could have made trillions of dollars.
It's great to dream though.

Absolutely.  In fact the web has more shelf life than a magazine - but I do like getting them in the mail - means at least someone is thinking of me even it is but once a month
