is this ligit and can I trust this guy?
« on: February 24, 2010, 07:35:26 PM »
Got this email and was just wondering if anybody else got this same email or just me and is it all trustworthy?

My name is Tom Morrison and I'm an outdoor writer/webmaster with
Southwestern Ontario Bow & Gun ( www.swobg.com  --  my personal
hunting article website) recently built in '08 which has quickly built
a loyal and varied following at an average visit rate of 724 per day -
and that's in the off-season.

I am an outdoor writer of some 20 years now, published locally,
nationally and internationally on everything from fishing to gun
hunting to bow hunting.  My focus over the last few years has shifted
to primarily bow and gun hunting which has opened my efforts to many
great manufacturers and readers.

As you will find when visiting my site, I am presently working with
many leaders in the hunting products industry and feel very fortunate
to be associated with them, having said that, I am looking to showcase
a few up-and-coming and established turkey call makers for the turkey hunters (our readers) to help them achieve all they can in the field through
innovative and quality products for the 2010 seasons.

I would like to work with Crooked Wood Calls with a view towards
product sponsorship in regards to your line of turkey calls for my
turkey hunting articles/features this coming 2010 season (spring/fall).

SWOBG.com tries to offer it's readers alternatives to many high-end,
expensive tools found on the market today for the field while not
sacrificing quality for our hunters. Crooked Wood Calls offers just
that kind of product in their turkey line while maintaining success in
the fields. Specifically, calls that retail for under $100.00 are what
we'd like to promote the budget hunter that still wants that edge of
using a call with great tone.  I am making room on SWOBG.com for five
turkey call makers as an alternative to some of the big boys out there
and it would be pleasure to promote Crooked Wood Calls to the readers
of SWOBG.com.

Crooked Wood Calls will receive, in return for your confidence and product:
--index/home page introduction with links to your site, our sponsor
page and your own Crooked Wood Calls product page built for you in our
template
--a link on every page within SWOBG.com
--sponsor page linkage
--have your own Crooked Wood Calls product page constructed within the site
--mentions, photos and video of the Crooked Wood Calls products used
in the field on my hunts with specific linkage back to your site
product pages on your site for purchase

I would like to build a long lasting and mutually beneficial
relationship with Crooked Wood Calls if at all possible.

You are invited to visit www.swobg.com and have a look around to view
my present lines and the promos on each.  This is a product for
promotion exchange, not a cash pay-as-you-go monthly expense.

I look forward to your reply and many thanks for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Hi Chris.
Yes this is legit.  My name is Tom Morrison.  I follow posts in my stats and it's lead me here.
As you can see through SWOBG.com, it's a site about hunting, hunters and promoting products for hunting .  I like to give some small businesses a chance for more exposure through my site that happens to do well.  You can see through the sponsors on the site like Avery, TruGlo, etc that the site attracts a fair bit of attention.
This year I thought I'd like to help out some small and maybe not so small turkey call makers.  Simple.  The letter does what it says.  I'm looking for 5 businesses that want to get more exposure.  I don't charge dollars, only product, to do this.  Product in these times is easier to come up with than cash - all advertisers on the site appreciate this for a change.
The invite is there for any wishing to participate.  If not, I wish them all the best and hope they do well in the business.
I appreciate the concern though - good to be safe and thanks for looking in.

Tom

Thanks Tom, I appreciate the offer.  You know you can't be too careful these days. ;D  I'll have to see what I can come up with as far as calls go and i'll bet back in touch with you.  Thanks and God bless!

Not a problem.  I can understand the apprehension.  Usually I will contact through email first because it's so much less time consuming than an initial phone call.  Those contacted are always more than welcome to reply to the mail to ask me to give them a call.  To date, I have contacted about 30 makers - most may have the same suspicions as you and if they read this then I invite them contact me for a one on one.  Hopefully 5 will make it onto the site and I may even increase that based upon response.
Thanks again for checking.  Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Mose...in todays day in age it wouldn't hurt to call some of the people he has on the page if you are unsure. It's tough to trust and when you get an email like that I would contact some of the call makers then get back.

For what it's worth- I'm in Ontario, in the same area code actually, and have never heard of him before or seen his site... before you posted it here.
It's not the end of the world, but you can see it from there.

I really didn't want to become involved in this but I see it's a problem anymore to take anyone seriously when they have an offer to small business so please, feel free to contact Randall Haley - the latest addition to the site with your questions about myself of the site.  In fact it's encouraged.  By the way, I will wager that Labman has never heard of the gentleman that lives 3 blocks over in his area code before of knows what he does either.  Evidently the site swobg.com and all the work that has gone into it over the last 3 years doesn't provide testimonial and that's okay I suppose but then again, I had never heard of OsageRoost.com before either until I followed a stat hit on my pages - yet I can see that there's been a lot of work put into this as well.
It's a simple offer and there's no pressure to take it.  The cost is in product only - two calls of your choice to be promoted on the site.  Thanks for the consideration and I'm glad to see the community watches the back of it's members.

Tom
